Lenten Message from Bishop Burbidge

ARLINGTON, Va.  – The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Arlington, released the following message today:

As we begin the sacred Season of Lent with ashes on our forehead, we are reminded that our lives here on earth are merely a journey with an ultimate goal of eternal life which we all share. So, now is the time to assure that we are prepared for that moment when the Lord calls us to himself and judges in love and mercy. Thus, Lent is a special invitation to deepen our commitment to daily conversion so that we are living with in integrity and holiness of life. With the help of our Lord, we achieve this radical transformation through prayer, fasting and almsgiving.  First is prayer, reminding us of our complete dependency on God.  Secondly, fasting allows us to let go of the things that weigh us down and that we do not need, and to remind us that only God can satisfy the hunger of our hearts.  Finally, our recommitment to ‘love your neighbor as yourself’ transforms our hearts, as we grow in generosity.

It is my hope and prayer that this Lent is a source of abundant blessings for all the faithful in the Diocese of Arlington and a time of recommitment to the Lord and His call to conversion.

Note:  Bishop Burbidge will be the celebrant for Ash Wednesday Mass, Wednesday, March 1, 2017, at 12:05 p.m. at the Cathedral of Saint Thomas More, 3901 North Cathedral Lane, Arlington, Virginia.

Mensaje Cuaresmal de Monseñor Burbidge

ARLINGTON, VA. Monseñor Michael Burbidge, Obispo de Arlington, publicó hoy el siguiente mensaje:

Al comenzar la sagrada temporada de Cuaresma con la imposición de las cenizas en la frente, se nos recuerda que nuestra vida aquí en la Tierra es apenas un peregrinaje con una meta final que todos compartimos. De manera que este es el momento en que debemos asegurarnos de estar preparados para la hora en que el Señor nos llame a estar con Él y nos juzgue con amor y misericordia. Por lo tanto, la Cuaresma es una invitación especial a afianzar nuestro compromiso con la conversión diaria para que llevemos una vida de integridad y santidad. Con la ayuda de Nuestro Señor, logramos esta transformación radical por medio de la oración, el ayuno y la limosna. En primer lugar, la oración nos recuerda nuestra total dependencia de Dios. En segundo lugar, el ayuno nos permite deshacernos de las cosas innecesarias que nos hunden con su peso y nos recuerda que solamente Dios puede saciar el hambre de nuestro corazón. Por último, nuestro renovado compromiso con el mandamiento de “amar al prójimo como a nosotros mismos” nos transforma el corazón a medida que crecemos en generosidad.

En espíritu de oración, abrigo la esperanza de que esta Cuaresma sea una fuente de abundantes bendiciones para todos los fieles de la Diócesis de Arlington y una temporada de renovación del compromiso con el Señor y con el llamamiento que nos hace a la conversión.
