Bishop Burbidge's April 4th Homily "Stay Focused"

The following homily was given by the Most Rev. Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Arlington, on April 4,, 2017, at the Cathedral of Saint Thomas More:

How many times have we heard from parents, teachers, coaches, or supervisors these words: “Stay focused!”

It is sound advice.  It helps to keep our priorities in order.  In a real sense today, the Word of God is telling us to do the same, especially as we continue through these days and prepare to enter the holiest of weeks.

In the midst of many distractions and busyness, stay focused on Jesus Christ, lifted high on the cross, the one who turned chaos into order.  In the midst of the burden of sin, weaknesses and failure, stay focused on Jesus Christ, lifted high on the cross, whose mercy is greater than any sin.  Carrying daily crosses and burdens, stay focused on Jesus, lifted high on the cross, who assures us that when our crosses are united to His, we have the strength and grace to endure.  As we mourn loved ones, especially this time of year, stay focused on Jesus, lifted high on the cross, who proved victorious even over death itself.

These will be sacred days and we will have a Holy Week, if our focus is where it needs to be: on Jesus, lifted high on the cross, the one who is Lord, forever and ever.
