University of Mary Washington holds Mass for Athletes

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The University of Mary Washington is holding a Mass for athletes April 12 at its Campus Recreation Field (also known as intramural field) located on Fitzhugh Street in Fredericksburg.

The event is called Mass Under the Lights.

“Our athletes are key members of the UMW community, but because of the schedules with academics and their athletics, they are extremely busy. This gives us an opportunity to let them know they are prayed for and not forgotten,” said Fr. Christopher Vaccaro, Chaplain and Director of Catholic Campus Ministry.

It’s a spectacular event. Last year, about 70 students attended – both Catholics and non-Catholics.  This year, Fr. Vaccaro expects a good turnout. “We are hoping to have members of a number of the teams represented and we have reached out to all the teams and most, if not all, of their coaches.”

Fr. Vaccaro says he brings the Mass to the “home field” of the athletes, symbolizing that the Lord is there even when they compete.
