Meet Fr. Townsend.

What did you do prior to entering seminary?

After graduating college in 2011, I worked at GEICO Auto Insurance for a few years.

What influenced your decision to apply for seminary entrance?

There were two factors that affected my decision to apply for seminary. The first was the development of my prayer life, which was brought about through spiritual direction and a commitment to daily prayer. The second factor in my decision was the example of several priests I have been blessed to know over the past fifteen years. Their selfless and joyful example inspired me to serve Our Lord and His Church in a similar way.

Why do you want to be a priest?

I have always had the desire to serve others in a meaningful way. I have been blessed to experience a great joy and sense of peace when receiving the Sacraments, and I want to share that peace and joy with others.

What are your favorite pastimes?

Playing basketball or any sports, hiking, reading, drinking coffee, watching movies and spending time with my family.

What is your favorite quote?

“Do not be afraid. Do not be satisfied with mediocrity. Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” - St. John Paul II

Who is your favorite Saint and why?

St. Joseph, since he has such a unique vocation story and also serves as a wonderful example of what it means to be a man. I have to add that I have a special devotion to the recently canonized St. John Paul II, who is an inspiration for Catholics of all ages and backgrounds.

What advice would you give to a young man thinking about the seminary?

The most important step to discern God's call, whatever it may be, is to grow close to Him. Develop a good prayer life and make regular use of the Sacraments to grow in holiness. A good spiritual director is also invaluable in discerning God's Will.
