Learn what led Fr. Courtney to the seminary.

What did you do prior to entering seminary?

I worked at a law & public policy non-profit in Washington for two years.

What influenced your decision to apply for seminary entrance?

I was inspired by the priests of Arlington and encouraged by the faith of my friends and family. Once the recurring thought of joining the priesthood became something too strong to keep ignoring, I knew I had to apply for entrance to the seminary. I was blessed to have a lot of help along the way.

Why do you want to be a priest?

I want to conform my will to the Lord's and to do His work in the way He asks of me; by bringing His people to Him through the sacraments.

What are your favorite pastimes?

My favorite pastime is America's Pastime--specifically following the Washington Nationals.

What is your favorite quote?

“I would have people in time of silence take good heed that their minds be occupied with good thoughts, for unoccupied they will never be.” -- St. Thomas More

Who is your favorite Saint and why?

I have to name a few; I don't want anyone feeling left out because I need all the help I can get! St. Thomas More and Bl. Karl I of Austria are inspiring examples of what it means to witness for Christ as a public figure. St. Thomas was principled in his responsibilities to his country but willing to die rather than compromise God's law, and Bl. Karl strove to show Christlike love and devotion to his people even as he died in exile and ignominy for his efforts. St. Joseph of Cupertino exemplifies what it means to persevere on the path to holiness in one's personal life despite all kinds of obstacles and discouragement.

What advice would you give to a young man thinking about the seminary?

Pray the rosary every day and don't hesitate for any reason to ask for help in your discernment. It's neither too early nor too late.
