What did you do prior to entering seminary?
After college, I was afforded the opportunity to teach English at a seminary in Bethlehem for a year, which led to a short period of discernment with the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem.
What influenced your decision to apply for seminary entrance?
The examples of truly good and holy priests.
Why do you want to be a priest?
To grow closer to Jesus Christ.
What are your favorite pastimes?
Hiking! And a good pick-up soccer game when I get the chance.
What is your favorite quote?
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you always, to the close of the age.” -- Our Lord, Matthew 28:19-20
Who is your favorite Saint and why?
Saint Augustine went down many wayward paths before finding baptism: wild living as a student in the city, emptiness as an academic, dishonesty as an elder in the Manichean cult; but he went on to become a great pastor and a doctor of the Church. He beautifully expressed the truth of his past in his autobiography: “O God...our hearts are restless until they rest in thee.”
What advice would you give to a young man thinking about the seminary?
I would relay the same advice that the Church gives to all of us who are seeking fuller lives in Christ: read scripture, stay close to the sacraments, pray constantly, and do not be afraid. “We know that in everything God works for good with those who love him,” Saint Paul writes (Romans 8:28), and elsewhere, “for by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not your own doing, it is the gift of God--not because of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them,” (Ephesians 2:8-10).
