Office of Youth Ministry Intern

Purpose:

The OYM intern’s primary function is to assist the Office of Youth Ministry with the preparation and implementation of large scale programs throughout the summer. This includes but is not limited to WorkCamp, Deeper Waters, and Kick-off. The OYM intern will be expected to complete tasks with limited supervision. The OYM intern works as a team member with the entire OYM staff to plan and implement these projects.

Principle Duties:

Youth ministry often requires a broad range of skills and tasks to be completed including office work, arts and crafts style work, computer skills, copying and scanning skills, interpersonal skills and creativity in clearly communicating a message to youth and volunteers. All of these skills are used within the internship through a wide variety of tasks and projects the intern may be given. These tasks may include, but are not limited to, assisting with preliminary meeting preparations such as Adult Training Days, Contractor Meetings and all accompanying paperwork and packets, helping set up for events, school set up, speaking with WorkCamp residents, guiding  youth and volunteers at WorkCamp, compiling feedback information after an event and assisting with the general closeout of the event.    

This position is managed by the Director and supervised jointly by the Assistant Director and WorkCamp Coordinator. Formal direction meetings will take place on a weekly basis. Interaction with all of the Office of Youth Ministry and other chancery staff will occur on a daily basis.

Qualifications:

  • Must be working towards a Bachelor's or Graduate Degree
  • Must have a valid driver's license and the ability to operate a vehicle
  • Must be able to meet OPCYP compliancy requirements
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Must have strong computer skills, including the ability to create and manage databases  (proficiency in Excel required)
  • Prior program management and project planning skills is a plus
  • Must have the ability to multitask
  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills
  • Must have knowledge of the mission of the Office of Youth Ministry as well as the desire and ability to promote the mission and the faith
  • Must be able to lift medium to heavy weight of 75 - 100 lbs
  • Must be willing and able to perform work in cramped, uncomfortable spaces (attics, crawl spaces, utility closets, etc.) for extended periods of time during WorkCamp
  • Prior experience with parish youth ministry programs a plus

WorkCamp Intern

Purpose:

The WorkCamp intern is primarily responsible for assisting with the preparation, implementation, and closeout of WorkCamp in and around Fredericksburg, VA.

Principle Duties:

Include but is not limited to, project site preparation and verification of material deliveries; communicating with WorkCamp residents; assisting with the setup of the ‘homebase’ school; moving equipment (stage, protective floor mats, scaffolding, etc.); pick-up final permits in early June (project work permits and use permits); ensure that vendors set up equipment correctly and in a timely manner (shower trailer, ice machines, roll-off dumpsters, etc.); guiding  youth and volunteers through assigned tasks at WorkCamp. The intern will also assist with the post-WorkCamp follow-up with residents; data-entry for resident follow-up; help with site cleanup at project sites as necessary; identify follow-up work as necessary; help track follow-up work progress to completion.

This position is managed by the Director and supervised by the WorkCamp Coordinator. Formal direction meetings will take place on a weekly basis. Communication and direction will occur on a daily basis with the intent of guiding the intern through necessary tasks and projects. The intern will be required to be present at the Office of Youth Ministry at least one day per week. Other direct supervision and direction will occur as necessary throughout the week as well.

Qualifications:

  • Must be working towards a Bachelor's or Graduate Degree
  • Must have a valid driver's license and the ability to operate a vehicle
  • Must have an operating vehicle and ability to drive more than 100 miles per day with reimbursement of expenses
  • Must be able to meet OPCYP compliancy requirements
  • Must have basic computer and office skills (proficiency with Word and Excel)
  • Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends have basic construction understanding, prior construction experience or equivalent
  • Must have strong written and oral communication skills
  • Must have knowledge of the mission of the Office of Youth Ministry as well as the desire and ability to promote the mission and the faith
  • Must be able to lift medium to heavy weight of 75 - 100 lbs
  • Must be willing and able to perform work in cramped, uncomfortable spaces (attics, crawl spaces, utility closets, etc.) for extended periods of time during WorkCamp
  • Must be self-motivated and have a proven ability to work independently with clear instructions provided and within a team environment
  • Prior experience with parish youth ministry programs a plus
  • College Junior or above and live near Fredericksburg Virginia area but willing and able to commute to Arlington, VA as necessary.
