Bishop Urges Return to the Heart of Christ 2011-10-27
Bishop Loverde Releases Pastoral Letter on the Heart of Christ; Relics of Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque Tours the Diocese; Diocese to be consecrated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus     Calling on Catholics to deepen their faith and share it with others, Arlington Bishop Paul S. Loverde recently released a pastoral letter to the nearly half million Catholics of the diocese entitled "Fountain of Life, Fire of Love".  His first pastoral letter in nearly five years addresses the "deadening cycle of pain and inward retreat" brought on by distraction, sin, indifference and "cold and distant" hearts. Drawing from his own experience of pilgrimage and devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Divine Mercy, Bishop Loverde invites Catholics and the wider community to a more personal experience of the Heart of Christ. ... read more

Bishop Loverde on the death of Msgr. Thomas J. April 9 - Annual Diocesan Science Fair From Engineering to Zoology to Behavioral Sciences, seventh- and eighth-grade students from 32 diocesan schools and a homeschool group will compete in the 2011 Diocesan Science Fair at Paul VI Catholic High School, Fairfax. Students' projects will be judged on their use of the scientific method, the question posed and the conclusion reached in their exhibit, their collection of data and the presentation of the project. March 5: Diocesan-Wide Spelling Bee to be Held in ArlingtonMore than 30 seventh- and eighth-grade Catholic school students will be participating in a Spelling Bee at the Cathedral of Saint Thomas More, Arlington. Each participating Catholic school across the diocese sends a finalist to represent them after an in-school competition, held mostly during Catholic Schools Week in February. The four finalists of the competition will receive prizes: $150 (first place), $100 (second place) and $50 (third and fourth places). The prizes are courtesy of the Catholic War Veterans Post #1652, St. James Parish, Falls Church. An eighth-grade student from Saint Rita School, Alexandria, took first prize last year. January 10-15: Basketball Challenge Begins National Vocation Awareness Week The Diocese of Arlington will host the annual seminarian basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 8, at Pope John Paul the Great High School Gymnasium, Dumfries. This event kicks off National Vocation Awareness Week, a time in which the Church encourages and promotes discernment by Catholics to the religious life. The seminarians, men in formation for the priesthood, will compete against young men from Quo Vadis, a high school men's discernment group.
