Social Justice Ministries

[Jesus] unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: 'The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives And recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord.' He said to them, 'Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.'
Luke 4:16-19, 21

Because the work of promoting peace, protecting life and ensuring justice is integral to our faith, this work is shared by several programs and offices in the Diocese of Arlington that act as resources to parishes and individuals.

Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is the U.S. Catholic Bishops’ overseas relief and development agency.  Learn about its mission.  Our diocesan CRS Office supports CRS programs locally.  We educate parishioners about the work of CRS and how it relates to our faith. We assist local parishes in connecting to programs offered by the national office, including Fair Trade and Operation Rice Bowl. Rice Bowl donations fund both international relief efforts and a local grant program that supports rural food programs. Read more.

Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD),

"Justice is inseparable from charity, and instrinsic to it. Justice is the primary way of charity." (Caritas in Veritate, #6, 2009).

The annual CCHD Collection in the Diocese of Arlington is the weekend of Nov. 19-20. Please give generously.

CCHD is the U.S. Bishops’ campaign against poverty, helps people in need here in the United States to break out of the cycle of poverty. CCHD funds programs that help people develop job skills, start businesses, and improve their neighborhoods and their children’s schools. Click here to find out about the annual collection.

CCHD is funded by a second collection taken up in most U.S. dioceses each November. Twenty-five percent of the amount collected in the Arlington Diocese stays in the Diocese to support anti-poverty efforts located here. All funding applications for projects located in the Diocese are reviewed to ensure that they meet CCHD funding criteria and that they comply with the social and moral teachings of the Catholic Church. See more about our Diocesan CCHD work here.
