Message from Bishop Burbidge on the 54th World Day of Prayer for Vocations

On this 54^th World Day of Prayer for Vocations, we join together to “ask the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest” (Lk 10:2), and to pray for all those already serving in the harvest as priests or consecrated religious.  We give thanks to God for these men and women who give their lives to make Christ visible through their witness, their prayer and their service. 

In his message for this day, Pope Francis tells us that we are all called to be missionaries of the Gospel, “men and women touched and transformed by the joy of God’s love, who cannot keep this experience just to ourselves.” Just as Christ has touched our hearts and minds, so too should we be inspired to invite others to consider a call to be a priest, brother or sister.  In a special way, I respectfully ask parents and grandparents to encourage your children and grandchildren to be open to God’s call and to assure them of your willingness to support them in their discernment. 

May we be united in our prayer for an increase of vocations to the Priesthood and Consecrated Life within our Church and diocese, and in our commitment to help others to hear and to respond to God’s call in their lives.

Mensaje de Monseñor Burbidge, Obispo de Arlington,
con motivo de la 54 a Jornada Mundial de Oración por las Vocaciones

En esta 54^a Jornada Mundial de Oración por las Vocaciones, nos unimos para “rogarle al dueño de los sembrados que envíe trabajadores para la cosecha” (Lucas 10:2) y para rezar por todos los que ya prestan servicio en la cosecha como sacerdotes o religiosos consagrados. Damos gracias a Dios por estos hombres y mujeres que dedican su vida a hacer visible a Cristo por medio de su testimonio, su oración y su servicio.

En el mensaje de este día, el Papa Francisco nos dice que todos los cristianos hemos sido constituidos  misioneros del Evangelio: “hombres y mujeres tocados y transformados por la alegría de sentirse amados por Dios, que no pueden guardar esta experiencia solo para sí”. Así como Cristo ha tocado nuestro corazón y nuestra mente, también nosotros debemos sentirnos inspirados a invitar a otros a pensar en un llamado a ser sacerdote, hermano o hermana. De una forma especial, respetuosamente pido a los padres y abuelos que animen a sus hijos y nietos a abrirse al llamado de Dios y que les aseguren que están dispuestos a apoyarlos en su discernimiento. 

Unámonos en la oración para pedir un aumento de las vocaciones al Sacerdocio y a la Vida Consagrada dentro de nuestra Iglesia y Diócesis y en nuestro compromiso de ayudar a los demás a oír el llamado de Dios en su vida y a responderle al Señor.
