DISTINGUISHED TEACHERS OF THE YEAR AWARD
The Arlington Diocese Distinguished Teachers of the Year Award Program has been established by the Catholic Business Network of Northern Virginia (CBN-NV) and the Arlington Diocese School Board to honor dedicated Pre-K to Twelfth Grade teachers in Catholic schools in the Diocese of Arlington whose accomplishments and talents have made an extraordinary impact on students, colleagues and the school community. These awards recognize teachers who consistently and in extraordinary ways evidence exemplary teaching, a Christian and caring attitude and dedication to their school communities.
Distinguished Teachers of the Year Award Program
Nominations were accepted until the first Friday in February. The Arlington Diocese Distinguished Teachers of the Year Awards Selection Committee will review each nomination. Awardees will be notified by the end of March 2008.
Awards
The Arlington Diocese Distinguished Teachers of the Year Award includes a $1000 cash prize for each recipient funded by the Catholic Business Network.
All winners will be announced and recognized at the annual Catholic Business Network of Northern Virginia Catholic Schools/Business Partnership Awards Banquet held each spring.
BLUE RIBBON SCHOOLS OF EXCELLENCE
On September 22, 2006, St. Thomas More Cathedral School in Arlington and St. Leo the Great Catholic School in Fairfax were named No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Education.
The Blue Ribbon School of Excellence Award “honors public and private K-12 schools that are either academically superior in their states or that demonstrate dramatic gains in student achievement,” according to the Department of Education.

Fr. Mark Mealey, OSFS, President of the Board, explained, “This has been a thoughtful and thorough process. In the end, the Cherry Hill site emerged as a prime location based on our criteria of student growth, cost-effectiveness, and good stewardship.” The Cherry Hill property was gifted to the diocese in 1997 on the condition that it be used for a high school.
