Bishop Burbidge's Homily for Mass for the Preservation of Peace and Justice

As we celebrate this Mass for the Preservation of Peace and Justice, I am so grateful for the presence of leaders throughout our diocese, including those from the black community, and for the presence of all those here in the cathedral and those participating via livestream. Our gathering reflects our firm belief that it is the Lord and his Spirit who will heal and unite us as the Body of Christ, and who will renew the face of the earth.

Today marks two weeks since the brutal and incomprehensible death of Mr. George Floyd. At this Mass, we offer our prayers for Mr. Floyd, his family and all who grieve his death. We also pray for justice in our world reflected in our absolute expectation that law enforcement officials never abuse their authority with excessive, unacceptable and cruel force. We pray for the eradication in our nation of racism, injustice and all evil actions that fail to revere the sacredness and dignity of each and every person.

As we pray for the preservation of peace and justice in our nation, we know the Lord who hears our prayers also calls us to action.

Thus, gathered as a community, we must first confess to God the things we have said or done to contribute to any form of racism and discrimination and/or for the times we did nothing to prevent them. Confessing before the community helps us to seek healing for the pain we may have caused others, our brothers and sisters in Christ.

In these unsettling times, we rightly condemn outrage that turns to further violence, destroying property and hurting others. We pray that those with unheard hurts and unhealed wounds and will turn instead to God, who leads us to the path of non-violence and peace, so that we may live together in harmony as members of God's holy family.

Yes, God calls us to action! So, now more than ever, we must bring our faith into the public arena and allow the Lord to use our voice as we advocate strongly for a more just society. We ask God to send us his Holy Spirit for the courage and fortitude we need to be his faithful witnesses even when it means we must suffer or be rejected by others for defending all that is holy, right and just.

God has always called us to act with justice and peace toward all people. In this Mass, he says to us, “Put on love. Let the peace of Christ control your hearts.” Only then can we sing confidently, “Justice will flourish in his time, and fullness of peace forever.”

As we soon receive the Holy Eucharist, the source of our unity, we pray that the grace received may be fruitful so that God can work through us to eradicate evil and preserve true peace and justice. For as our Savior promises, “Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. … Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.”

May God bless us and our nation and watch over us now and always. Amen.

Misa por la Conservación de la Paz y la Justicia Homilía pronunciada por Monseñor Michael F. Burbidge

Al celebrar esta Misa por la Conservación de la Paz y la Justicia, hago llegar mis más sinceros agradecimientos por la presencia de los líderes de toda nuestra Diócesis, incluso los de la comunidad afrodescendiente, todas las personas que se encuentran en esta Catedral y los participantes a través de la transmisión en vivo. Este encuentro refleja nuestra firme creencia en que Nuestro Señor y su Espíritu nos sanarán y unirán como el Cuerpo de Cristo y renovarán la faz de la Tierra.

Hoy se cumplen dos semanas de la muerte brutal e incomprensible del Sr. George Floyd. En esta Misa, ofrecemos nuestras oraciones por el Sr. Floyd, su familia y todos los que lloran su muerte. También rezamos porque haya justicia en nuestro mundo, reflejada en nuestra expectativa absoluta de que los agentes del orden nunca abusen de su autoridad con fuerza excesiva, inaceptable y cruel. Rezamos por la erradicación del racismo, de la injusticia y de todos los actos de maldad en nuestra nación, con los cuales se profana la naturaleza sagrada y la dignidad de cada persona.

Al rezar por la conservación de la paz y la justicia en nuestra nación, sabemos que el Señor que escucha nuestras plegarias también nos hace un llamado a la acción.

Por lo tanto, reunidos como comunidad, primero que todo debemos confesarle a Dios las cosas que hemos dicho o hecho para contribuir a cualquier forma de racismo y discriminación, como también las veces que no hicimos nada para evitarlos. La confesión ante la comunidad nos ayuda a buscar sanación por el dolor que hayamos podido causarles a otros, a nuestros hermanos y hermanas en Cristo.

En estos tiempos desconcertantes, condenamos con toda razón la atrocidad que lleva a más violencia, destrucción de los bienes de propiedad y daño a otras personas. Rezamos para que quienes sufren daños en silencio y tienen heridas sin sanar vuelvan los ojos a Dios, que nos lleva por el camino de la paz y de la no violencia, a fin de que podamos vivir juntos en armonía como miembros de la Sagrada Familia de Dios.

Sí, ¡Dios nos hace un llamado a la acción! De manera que, ahora más que nunca, debemos llevar nuestra fe a la esfera pública y permitir que el Señor use nuestra voz para abogar enérgicamente por una sociedad más justa. Le pedimos a Dios que nos mande su Espíritu Santo para que nos dé el valor y la fortaleza que necesitamos para dar fiel testimonio de Él, aunque eso signifique que debamos sufrir o ser rechazados por otros por defender lo que es santo, correcto y justo.

Dios nos ha llamado siempre a obrar con justicia y paz hacia toda la gente. En esta Misa nos dice: “Revístanse de amor. Que la paz de Cristo reine en su corazón”. Solo entonces podemos cantar con confianza: “Que en sus días florezca la justicia y abunde la paz, mientras dure la luna”.

Tan pronto recibamos la Sagrada Eucaristía, fuente de nuestra unidad, recemos para que la gracia recibida sea fructífera con el fin de que Dios pueda obrar por medio de nosotros para erradicar el mal y conservar la paz y la justicia verdaderas, porque como promete Nuestro Salvador, “Bienaventurados los que tienen hambre y sed de justicia, porque ellos serán saciados… Bienaventurados los pacificadores, porque ellos serán llamados hijos de Dios”.

Que Dios nos bendiga, bendiga a nuestra nación y nos guarde ahora y siempre. Amén.
