Statement from Bishop Michael F. Burbidge
on the national March for Life 2020

January 23, 2020

On Jan. 24, Catholics and people of good will from around the nation will come to Washington participate in the March for Life, which this year marks the 47th solemn anniversary of the legalization of abortion in the United States. This day of penance and prayer for the legal protection of unborn children is the largest annual human-rights demonstration in the world. By marching through the streets and reminding our elected officials that all life is sacred and should be protected, we live out our Gospel mandate to radiate the Light of Christ in the midst of darkness. We carry His light forward when we fast, pray, and march with peace and great purpose.

We have seen that darkness in recent times in our commonwealth and nation as elected officials work to enact extreme anti-life bills and even propose the expansion of abortion access to the latest stages of pregnancy and perhaps beyond. Despite the darkness, we do not despair - Christ is our hope in every season, and his truth conquers the darkness. With his hope and truth, we remain steadfast in faith and joyful in hope that one day all children, created in the image and likeness of God, will be protected from harm and given the chance at life.

I express my sincere gratitude for all who will travel to Washington to march on behalf of the Gospel of Life. You are a faithful witness in these times, and you are a reminder that light will always pierce through the darkness. Let us continue to stand together as we joyfully announce the Good News and shine the Light of Christ for all to see.
