ARLINGTON, Va. – On Wednesday, December 12, approximately 2,500 people are expected
to pour into Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church in Woodbridge to celebrate the
anniversary of the apparition of the Blessed Mother to Juan Diego on December 12,
1531. Following the Mass there will be a
procession with some of the faithful carrying a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

Apparition
of Our Lady of Guadalupe
The Virgin Mary appeared to a poor man
named Juan Diego on December 9, 1531. The Virgin asked him that a shrine be
built in her name in the exact spot where she appeared in Tepayac Hill, which
is now in Mexico City. Diego did what the Virgin asked, but when he told the
bishop of the request and the apparition, the bishop did not believe him and
demanded a sign before he would approve construction of the shrine. On December
12, the Virgin Mary reappeared to Juan Diego. She asked him to collect
roses from the top of Tepayac Hill which was normally barren – especially in
December – and to place the roses in his cloak. When Juan Diego took the roses
to the bishop, the roses fell to the floor, and Juan Diego’s cloak revealed the
image of the Virgin Mary.
That cloak is displayed today in the
Basilica de Guadalupe in Mexico City.

La Virgen María se apareció a un hombre pobre
llamado Juan Diego el 9 de diciembre de 1531. La Virgen le pidió construir
un santuario en su nombre en el lugar exacto donde ella apareció en la colina
de Tepayac – que está en la ciudad de México. Diego hizo lo que la Virgen
pidió, pero cuando Diego le dijo el obispo de la petición y la aparición, el
obispo no le creyó y exigió una señal antes de que aprobara la construcción del
Santuario. El 12 de diciembre, la Virgen María apareció a Juan
Diego. Ella le pidió recoger rosas en la cima de la colina de Tepayac que
normalmente no hay rosas – especialmente en diciembre y para colocar las rosas
en su manto. Cuando Juan Diego llevo las rosas al obispo, las rosas cayeron al
suelo, ye la capa de Juan Diego revelo la imagen de la Virgen Maria.
Esa capa se muestra hoy en la Basílica de
Guadalupe en la ciudad de México.
