Sharon McCarter

St. Joseph, Alexandria

Sharon McCarter is a member of Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Alexandria, Virginia. As a member of a military family, she spent most of her growing up years in Naples, Italy. Upon graduating from high school, she enrolled in Spelman College, earning a bachelor's degree in English. She went on the the University of Dayton and earned a master's degree in Communications. She had a long and successful career with the Federal Government, working for the Air Force, the Department of Defense, and the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. She retired as a senior executive after 36 years of service, building strong and successful organizations in communications, public affairs, education outreach, protocol and event planning. In her professional leadership roles she integrated culturally and professionally diverse individuals and groups into team-centered groups. Upon her retirement, still wanting to be of service to others, she became a substitute teacher for Fairfax County Public Schools, working with grades K-4 children with special needs. Currently, Sharon is a FEMA reservist and has served as a manager in recovery centers in Texas, Hawaii and Georgia. In this role, she helps survivors of all ethnicities and economic means. At St. Joseph, Ms. McCarter is a member of the Knights of Peter Claver Ladies Auxiliary Mother Mary Lange, Court 398; a lector; a Meals on Wheels volunteer; a member of the Welcome Committee; a member of Sisters in the Spirit; and a member of the parish Youth Committee. She and her husband Ben, live in Alexandria, Va., near Mount Vernon.
