Christmas, 2020

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,       

        Last Christmas, we never could have imagined that in just a couple months, our lives and our world would be forever changed by a global pandemic. In faith and love, we have striven to persevere through these difficulties. This year we have also been shaken once again by racial tensions in our nation. With trust in God, we continue to seek the transformation of our society, that it might more fully reflect God's Kingdom. Now, the celebration of Our Lord's birth renews us in the hope and peace that comes from him alone.

       When we seek models of encouragement, especially in times of trial, we need look no further than the Holy Family. Mary and Joseph traveled a long and dangerous road to keep Jesus safe. They experienced exhaustion, and yet they remained strong in faith and trusted in God's plan for them.

       As we celebrate this sacred season of Christmas, may we imitate Mary and Joseph and celebrate with reverence and joy the majesty and wonder of Christmas: “the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (Jn 1:14). By taking on human flesh, he joined us in our earthly existence. Christ endured the pain, disappointment and struggle of this life but also sanctified those moments. This Christmas, may we become more fully a dwelling place of the Word by entrusting our challenges, crosses, and very lives to his infinite love and divine mercy. In him, we will find the strength and grace we need.

       In this Christmas season, God invites us, through the words of St. Paul, to “let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body” (Col 3:15). May we be instruments of his peace and compassion in a world that desperately needs the witness of our faith and unity. Let us encourage and support one another in faith with a renewed commitment to serve our brothers and sisters in most need, striving daily to imitate Christ.

      It is my hope and prayer that Our Lord and Savior will bless you and your family with the peace that only he can give. May this precious gift be yours throughout the Christmas season and always.

Navidad de 2020

Estimados hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

        En la última Navidad, nunca hubiéramos podido imaginarnos que apenas en un par de meses nuestra vida y nuestro mundo cambiarían para siempre por causa de una pandemia mundial. Con fe y amor, nos hemos esforzado por perseverar en medio de estas dificultades. Este año también nos han estremecido una vez más las tensiones raciales en nuestra nación. Con confianza en Dios, seguimos buscando la transformación de nuestra sociedad para que refleje el Reino de Dios de una manera más plena. Ahora, la celebración del nacimiento de Nuestro Señor nos renueva en la esperanza y la paz que provienen solamente de Él.

        
        Al buscar modelos de aliento, particularmente en épocas de tribulaciones, no necesitamos mirar más allá de la Sagrada Familia. Maria y José recorrieron un largo y peligroso camino para proteger a Jesús. A pesar de su agotamiento, se mantuvieron firmes en la fe y confiaron en el plan de Dios para ellos.

       Al celebrar esta sagrada temporada de Navidad, ruego para que imitemos a María y a José y celebremos con reverencia y alegria la majestad y la maravilla de la Navidad: “El Verbo se hizo carne y habitó entre nosotros” (Juan 1:14). Al hacerse carne humana, Jesús se unió a nosotros en nuestra existencia terrenal. Cristo sufrió el dolor, la desilusión y la lucha de esta vida, pero también santificó esos momentos. Que en esta Navidad nos convirtamos más plenamente en una morada del Verbo al confiar nuestras dificultades, nuestras cruces y nuestra propia vida a su infinito amor y a su divina misericordia. En Él, encontraremos la fortaleza y la gracia que necesitamos.

       En esta temporada de Navidad, Dios nos invita, por medio de las palabras de San Pablo a dejar “que la paz de Cristo reine en sus corazones: esa paz a la que han sido Ilamados porque formamos un solo Cuerpo” (Colosenses: 3:15). Que seamos instrumentos de la paz y la compasión de Cristo en un mundo que necesita desesperadamente el testimonio de nuestra fe y unidad. Animémonos y apoyémonos unos a otros en la fe con un compromiso renovado de servir a nuestros hermanos y hermanas más necesitados, esforzándonos a diario por imitar a Cristo.

      Abrigo la esperanza de que Nuestro Señor y Salvador los bendiga a ustedes y a sus familias con la paz que solamente Él puede dar y rezo porque asi sea. Que este preciado don sea suyo en toda la temporada de Navidad y siempre.
