Statement by Bishop Michael F. Burbidge
on Hispanic Heritage Month

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Each year from September 15 through October 15 the United States celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month, a national celebration to commemorate the profound influence of Hispanic Americans and the contributions made by their ancestors from Latin American countries.  In a special way, we recognize those who have enriched our Catholic faith with their beautiful devotions and unique spirituality. 

Our Lord Jesus instructs us to welcome the stranger, and Pope Francis reminds us that: “The Church” is a Church “without frontiers, a Mother to all” that “spreads throughout the world a culture of acceptance and solidarity.”

During this month, let us strive to deepen our appreciation for, and unity with, Hispanic Americans.

May Our Divine Savior continue to grant us appreciation, love and respect for one another, now and always.

el Mes de la Herencia Hispana

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo: 

Cada año, del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre, Estados Unidos celebra el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, una celebración nacional sobre la profunda influencia y contribuciones hechas por los hispanos y sus antepasados. De manera especial, reconocemos a aquellos que han enriquecido nuestra fe católica con sus hermosas devociones y su espiritualidad única.

Nuestro Señor Jesús nos instruye a recibir al forastero, y el Papa Francisco nos recuerda que “La Iglesia [no] tiene fronteras, es madre de todos y se esfuerza por alimentar la cultura de la acogida y la solidaridad”. 

Durante este mes, les invito a profundizar nuestro aprecio por la herencia hispana en nuestro país. 

Que Nuestro Divino Salvador continúe otorgándonos aprecio, amor y respeto mutuo ahora y siempre.
