Statement by Bishop Michael F. Burbidge
on 2021 National Vocation Awareness Week

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

National Vocation Awareness Week coincides with the first year of preparation for our diocese's 50^th anniversary jubilee. This year's theme, “Do this in memory of me” (Lk 22:19), comes from Jesus' words at the Last Supper when he instituted the Sacraments of the Eucharist and Holy Orders.

For me, and for all the priests of this great diocese, these words are a reminder that Jesus has called us to follow him as a priest, to re-present his sacrifice daily on the altar, and to feed the faithful with the Bread of Life, our necessary nourishment here on earth as we strive daily for holiness of life.

We know that Christ continues to call men to be ministers of the Church's sacraments. We are blessed with 49 seminarians who are responding to that call, seeking to give their lives to make Christ present in the Eucharist.

Our diocese is also blessed to have almost 70 men and women in formation with religious orders throughout the world. These men and women, in addition to those already serving in our schools and hospitals and other apostolic works, give their lives in imitation of Christ, pursuing holiness and inspiring those around them to do the same.

In whatever path Our Lord has chosen for us, be it the priesthood, religious life, marriage, consecrated life, diaconate or the single life, we are called to become holy by setting aside time each day to be with Jesus in prayer, listening to him, learning from him and going forth to share his love with others.

Please join me this National Vocation Awareness Week as we pray particularly for priests, consecrated men and women, and married couples, that they remain steadfast in the promises and vows they made to God and to each other. We pray for those currently searching for their calling, that they be generous and courageous in following Christ. We pray for ourselves, that we, like Jesus, Mary and Joseph, give a more fervent “yes” each day to the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Finally, we pray for our diocese as we embark upon this Year of the Eucharist in preparation for our Jubilee, that it be marked by an increase in vocations to the priesthood and consecrated life.

May God continue to bless you with abundant graces, as you follow his call in your life now and always.

con motivo de la Semana Nacional de Concientización
 sobre las Vocaciones, 2021

Estimados hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

La Semana Nacional de Concientización sobre las Vocaciones coincide con el primer año de preparación para el Jubileo del 50º aniversario de nuestra Diócesis. El tema de este año, Hagan esto en conmemoración mía (Lucas 22:19), procede de las palabras pronunciadas por Jesús en la Última Cena cuando instituyó los Sacramentos de la Eucaristía y las Órdenes Sagradas.

A mí y a todos los sacerdotes de esta gran Diócesis, esas palabras nos recuerdan que Jesús nos ha llamado a seguirlo como sacerdote, a volver a presentar su sacrificio diario en el altar y a alimentar a los fieles con el Pan de Vida, el sustento que necesitamos aquí en la Tierra mientras aspiramos a diario a alcanzar la santidad en la vida.

Sabemos que Cristo sigue llamando a los hombres a ser ministros de los sacramentos de la Iglesia. Tenemos la bendición de contar con 49 seminaristas que han respondido a ese llamado y aspiran a dar su vida para hacer que Cristo esté presente en la Eucaristía.

Nuestra Diócesis también tiene la bendición de contar con casi 70 hombres y mujeres en formación con órdenes religiosas alrededor del mundo. Esos hombres y mujeres, junto con quienes ya prestan servicio en nuestras escuelas, hospitales y otras obras apostólicas, dan su vida en imitación de Cristo, buscan la santidad e inspiran a quienes los rodean para que hagan lo mismo.

Cualquiera que sea el camino que Nuestro Señor haya escogido para nosotros, ya sea el sacerdocio, la vida religiosa, la vida consagrada, el diaconado o la soltería, somos llamados a ser santos al dedicar tiempo a diario para estar con Jesús en oración, escucharlo, aprender de Él y compartir su amor con otras personas.

Les pido que se unan a mí en esta Semana Nacional de Concientización sobre las Vocaciones al rezar particularmente por los sacerdotes, los hombres y mujeres consagrados y las parejas casadas para que permanezcan firmes en las promesas y los votos hechos a Dios y los unos a los otros. Recemos por quienes buscan actualmente su llamado para que sean generosos y valientes al seguir a Cristo. Recemos por nosotros para que, al igual que Jesús, María y José, demos un “sí” cada día más ferviente a las indicaciones del Espíritu Santo. Por último, recemos por nuestra Diócesis al emprender este Año de la Eucaristía como preparación para nuestro Jubileo, con el fin de que se distinga por un aumento de las vocaciones al sacerdocio y a la vida consagrada.

Que Dios los siga bendiciendo con abundantes gracias al seguir el llamado que Él les haga en su vida ahora y siempre.
