Religious Freedom Week 2018

June 22-29, 2018

 

This summer, Bishop Burbidge and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) are calling Catholics across the country to pray and act in support of religious liberty within the U.S. and abroad during Religious Freedom Week 2018.

The theme for this year’s Religious Freedom Week is “Serving Others in God’s Love.” The week starts on June 22, the Feast of Sts. Thomas More and John Fisher, and ends on June 29, the Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul.

As a Diocese, we encourage you to participate in this important cause for the Catholic Church, by taking time each day to pray, reflect, and take action on religious liberty, both here in this country and abroad.

The Church has long sought to serve the needs of immigrants but in recent years has faced legal attacks, because they refuse to facilitate abortions for the children under their care. By defending religious freedom, we respect the Church's refusal to make such choices.

In imitating Christ's compassion and care for the sick, Catholic healthcare workers have been forced to violate their consciences and participate in abortions or lose their jobs. Support their conscience protection and freedom by contacting your Congress representative today.

Day 7 (June 28) Reflection

Catholic schools need the freedom to operate in accordance with Catholic convictions if they are to continue to be a source of vitality for our society. Let us pray that they may continue to have the freedom to teach and bear witness to the truth about God and creation.

Day 8 (June 29) Reflection

Religious freedom is rooted in human nature, and therefore it is a fundamental human right. The Church calls us to defend the dignity of every individual and community that seeks the truth about God, including Muslims, Jews, and others who do not share our Catholic Christian faith.

Religious freedom remains one of America's most precious possessions. And, as my brothers, the United States Bishops, have reminded us, all are called to be vigilant, precisely as good citizens, to preserve and defend that freedom from everything that would threaten or compromise it.
