2020 Lenten Message from Bishop Burbidge

Prayer, fasting and almsgiving: these time-tested spiritual disciplines proclaimed by Jesus in today's Gospel work and the sacred Season of Lent calls us to embrace them with a renewed commitment and fervor. Think also of these three words: do, daily and dependent. For these spiritual disciplines to work: we must actually do them on a daily basis ever dependent upon God's grace. Such a way of living will lead us to the spiritual transformation and conversion to which Lent calls us; to a deeper and more intimate union with the Lord; and to abundant blessings throughout this sacred season. 

One of my best retreats as a bishop was during Lent and directed by a well-known spiritual guide and author, Fr. Cantalamessa.  Throughout the retreat, I took copious notes as Fr. Cantalamessa shared many profound spiritual insights and guidance. At the end of the retreat, I purchased a holy card and asked him to write a message on it and sign it for me. I thought he would include a sentence or two from one of his talks. Instead, he simply wrote three words: “God loves you.”

Spend today not so much telling the Lord what you will do for Lent but rather by reflecting on the truth that “God loves you.” His love is perfectly revealed in his Son whose cross we are called to take up especially throughout these sacred days as we follow him to Calvary and to his victory at Easter. If you are convinced of God's love for you then you will want to love him even more and will embrace Jesus' call to prayer, fasting and almsgiving. If you do them on a daily basis dependent on God's grace, you will indeed have a Blessed Lent.  

As we begin our Lenten journey, may our prayer be that of today's psalm: “A clean heart create for me, O God, and a steadfast spirit renew within me.”

Oración, ayuno y limosna: estas disciplinas espirituales probadas por el tiempo proclamadas por Jesús en la obra evangélica de hoy y la sagrada Temporada de Cuaresma nos llaman a aceptarlas con un compromiso y fervor renovados. Piense también en estas tres palabras: hacer, diariamente y dependiente. Para que estas disciplinas espirituales funcionen: en realidad debemos hacerlas diariamente, siempre dependientes de la gracia de Dios. Tal forma de vida nos llevará a la transformación espiritual y la conversión a la que la Cuaresma nos llama; a una unión más profunda y más íntima con el Señor; y a abundantes bendiciones a lo largo de esta temporada sagrada.

Uno de mis mejores retiros como obispo fue durante la Cuaresma y dirigido por un conocido guía espiritual y autor, el p. Cantalamessa A lo largo del retiro, tomé abundantes notas como el p. Cantalamessa compartió muchas ideas espirituales profundas y orientación. Al final del retiro, compré una tarjeta sagrada y le pedí que escribiera un mensaje y me la firmara. Pensé que incluiría una o dos oraciones de una de sus charlas. En cambio, simplemente escribió tres palabras: "Dios te ama".

Pase hoy no tanto diciéndole al Señor lo que hará por la Cuaresma, sino reflexionando sobre la verdad de que "Dios lo ama". Su amor se revela perfectamente en su Hijo, cuya cruz estamos llamados a asumir especialmente durante estos días sagrados mientras lo seguimos al Calvario y a su victoria en la Pascua. Si está convencido del amor de Dios por usted, entonces querrá amarlo aún más y abrazará el llamado de Jesús a la oración, el ayuno y la limosna. Si los haces diariamente dependiendo de la gracia de Dios, tendrás una Cuaresma bendita.

Al comenzar nuestro viaje de Cuaresma, que nuestra oración sea la del salmo de hoy: "Un corazón limpio crea para mí, oh Dios, y un espíritu firme renueva dentro de mí".
