Statement from Bishop Michael F. Burbidge for Memorial Day

This Memorial Day weekend, as we head to family cookouts, venture to the beach or enjoy other beginning-of-summer activities, I encourage all to take some time to reflect on the true meaning of this holiday. On Memorial Day, we honor and mourn the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the U.S. military throughout our history, paying the ultimate price for our freedom.

I ask the faithful of the Diocese of Arlington and others of goodwill to make their own sacrifice this weekend to recall those service men and women who have gone before us. Offering some community service, a commemoration, a quiet prayer or just a moment of reflection is a meaningful way to cherish their memory. There are also numerous memorials and military cemeteries in our diocese and region where we can visit and pay homage to our local fallen heroes.

We also remember the grieving families of those lost, who made a unique sacrifice. There are empty seats where their loved ones should be sitting around the picnic table this weekend. The loss in these families is felt every day, not just on Memorial Day. We remember all those who died and pray they find peace in God's everlasting love.

Now and always, we are grateful for the selfless gift of these heroes and their families. May God reward those who die in the line of duty and comfort those who mourn them, and may God bless America.

Declaración del Obispo Burbidge sobre el Día Conmemorativo (Memorial Day)

Este fin de semana del Día Conmemorativo, mientras nos dirigimos a las barbacoas familiares, nos aventuramos a la playa o disfrutamos de otras actividades del comienzo del verano, animo a todos a tomarnos un tiempo para reflexionar sobre el verdadero significado de este día festivo. En el Día Conmemorativo, honramos y guardamos luto por los hombres y mujeres que dieron sus vidas sirviendo en el ejército de los Estados Unidos a lo largo de nuestra historia, pagando el precio más alto por nuestra libertad. 

Pido a los fieles de la Diócesis de Arlington y a otras personas de buena voluntad que hagan su propio sacrificio este fin de semana para recordar a aquellos hombres y mujeres del servicio militar que nos han precedido. Ofrecer algún servicio comunitario, una conmemoración, una oración en silencio o simplemente un momento de reflexión son maneras significativas de apreciar su memoria. También hay numerosos monumentos conmemorativos y cementerios militares en nuestra diócesis y región donde podemos visitar y rendir homenaje a nuestros héroes caídos locales.

También recordamos a las afligidas familias de los fallecidos, que hicieron un sacrificio único. Hay asientos vacíos donde sus seres queridos deberían estar sentados alrededor de la mesa de picnic este fin de semana. La pérdida en estas familias se siente todos los días, no sólo en el Día Conmemorativo. Recordamos a todos los que murieron y rezamos para que encuentren la paz en el amor eterno de Dios.

Ahora y siempre, estamos agradecidos por el don desinteresado de estos héroes y sus familias. Que Dios recompense a quienes mueren en acto de servicio y consuele a quienes los lloran, y que Dios bendiga a Estados Unidos.
