FORMATION

Master Catechist Program

The Master Catechist Training Program is open to experienced catechists who are ready to deepen their involvement in the catechetical ministry of the Church. After completion of a two-year program, candidates will be certified as Master Catechists, qualified to provide catechetical training in parishes.

Registration for classes at the Master Catechist Program are handled at the Notre Dame Graduate School of Christendom College.

The curriculum will be as follows:

Spring, 2021  The Creed - Catechism of the Catholic Church, Pillar 1

Fall, 2021       The Sacraments - Catechism of the Catholic Church, Pillar 2

Spring, 2022  The Moral Life - Catechism of the Catholic Church, Pillar 3

Fall, 2022       The Spiritual Life - Catechism of the Catholic Church, Pillar 4

Students will also take at least one online summer course online each of the two summers, for a total of two additional courses:

Summer 2021: The Bible

Summer 2022: Fathers of the Church OR Apologetics (students may also take both)

Finally, those students who are DREs must also take the online course, Policies Norms, and Best Practices. This course, while required for DREs, is also open to all other students of the Master Catechist Program.

Each class will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, and end at 11:30 a.m.  Please note that morning Mass at the parish is offered at 8 a.m., and refreshments will be offered at the Graduate School before class begins.

Each course will consist of 8 sessions, each lasting 2 ½ hours (20 hours total).

  • 1.You may participate in the class lectures through any combination of the following modes: (i) attending class personally at the Graduate School, (ii) joining class through live-streaming, or (iii) watching the recordings at your own pace. Regardless of mode, all students have the same qualification requirements beyond class attendance.

  • 2.Registration is limited to 25 students participating in class on-site, and 30 students participating online.

  • 3.The cost is $100 per course for each student (billed to the student).  The parish will be charged $400 per course for each student.  If this cost presents a financial burden to the student, then the parish or the Office of Faith Formation may be approached for assistance with the recommendation of the DRE.

  • 4.Students may take these courses for graduate academic credit (which will require additional work).  These credits would be applied to the Master of Arts degree and the Apostolic Catechetical Diploma.

Students interested in applying to the Master Catechist Program should complete the application form and send it to the Special Consultant for Catechetics, Colette Lienhard at the Office of Faith Formation (703-785-2319 or email: consultantforcatechetics@gmail.com).

I am very grateful to Dr. R. J. Matava, Dean of the Graduate School, and his staff for their assistance and support.  The expertise and infrastructure, which the Graduate School offers, will be a great benefit to those in the program and prepare them well as “Master Catechists.”

Also, all Directors of Religious Education must inform their Pastors and the Office of Catechetics of the students who will be participating in the program.

If you would like to know more about the program, please call the Office of Faith Formation at 703-841-2554 or email catechetics@arlingtondiocese.org. You may also visit the webpage for the Master Catechist Program on the Notre Dame Graduate School at www.graduate.christendom.edu
