Catechist Training and Resources

Catechists may choose from any of the resources found below, to further their knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith for the certification process in the Diocese of Arlington.

Master Catechist Program

The Master Catechist Training Program is open to experienced catechists who are ready to deepen their involvement in the catechetical ministry of the Church. After completion of a two-year program, candidates will be certified as Master Catechists, qualified to provide catechetical training in parishes.

Registration for classes at the Master Catechist Program are handled at the Notre Dame Graduate School of Christendom College.

The curriculum will be as follows:

Spring, 2019       The Creed - Catechism of the Catholic Church, Pillar I

Fall, 2019           The Sacraments - Catechism of the Catholic Church, Pillar 2

Spring, 2020       The Moral Life - Catechism of the Catholic Church, Pillar 3

Fall, 2020            The Spiritual Life - Catechism of the Catholic Church, Pillar 4

Also, students will take two additional courses: A Survey of Sacred Scripture and Apologetics

Each class will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday morning, and end at 11:30 a.m.  Please note that morning Mass at the parish is offered at 8 a.m., and refreshments will be offered at the Graduate School before class begins.

Each course will consist of 8 sessions, each lasting 2 ½ hours (20 hours total).

1. Students may take these classes either by participating in class, by participating in class through live-streaming, or by taking them at their own pace online.

2. Registration is limited to 25 students participating in class on site, and 30 students participating online.

3. The cost is $100 per course for each student (billed to the student).  The parish will be charged $400 per course for each student.  If this cost presents a financial burden to the student, then the parish or the Office of Catechetics may be approached for assistance with the recommendation of the DRE.

4. Students may take these courses for graduate credit (which will require additional work).  These credits would be applied to the Master of Arts degree and the Apostolic Catechetical Diploma.

The process for student registration may be found here: How to Register for the Master Catechist Program.  Any questions regarding the registration process should be directed to the Graduate School.

Also, all Directors of Religious Education must inform their Pastors and the Office of Catechetics of the students who will be participating in the program.
