Statement from Bishop Burbidge for the 56^th World Day of Prayer for Vocations

The Catholic Church celebrates the 56^th annual World Day of Prayer for Vocations on Good Shepherd Sunday. It is a special invitation to pray for all the priests and men and women religious who offer their lives in service to the Lord and His Church.

Our Holy Father Pope Francis promulgated a message for this day, in which he says that, “every vocation is a summons not to stand on the shore, nets in hand, but to follow Jesus on the path he has marked out for us, for our own happiness and for the good of those around us.”

Responding to the Lord’s call requires great courage and faith. It is not easy to chart a path where the destination is unknown. By taking our Lord’s hand and trusting in his divine providence and will for our lives, we find our greatest joy and consolation. In these days of suffering and crisis within the Church, we need men and women to step forward in total devotion to God as priests or consecrated religious more than ever. Pray fervently for those to whom God is giving the call, that they would embrace this gift and live it to the fullest.

May we live this World Day of Prayer for Vocations by trusting in our God who is faithful to His promises. Let us respond faithfully to the vocation to which He calls each of us, and let us pray for others, especially our young people, to do the same. May all in the Diocese of Arlington be united with the entire Body of Christ in our prayer for an increase of vocations to the Priesthood and Consecrated Life.

la 56ª Jornada Mundial de Oración por las Vocaciones

La Iglesia Católica celebra la 56ª Jornada Mundial de Oración por las Vocaciones el Domingo del Buen Pastor. Esta observancia anual es una invitación especial a orar por todos los sacerdotes y los hombres y mujeres religiosos que ofrecen su vida en servicio al Señor y a su Iglesia.

Nuestro Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco, promulgó un mensaje para esta Jornada, en el cual dice que “la vocación es una invitación a no quedarnos en la orilla con las redes en la mano, sino a seguir a Jesús por el camino que ha pensado para nosotros, para nuestra felicidad y para el bien de los que nos rodean”.

La respuesta a la llamada del Señor exige gran valor y fe. No es fácil trazar un camino cuando se desconoce el lugar de destino. Al tomar la mano de Nuestro Señor y confiar en su divina providencia y en su voluntad para nuestra vida, encontramos nuestro mayor consuelo y alegría. En estos días de sufrimiento y crisis dentro de la Iglesia, más que nunca necesitamos hombres y mujeres que sigan hacia adelante en total devoción a Dios como sacerdotes o religiosos consagrados. Recen fervorosamente por aquellos a quienes Dios llama para que acepten este don y lo vivan con plenitud.

Que vivamos esta Jornada Mundial de Oración por las Vocaciones con confianza en nuestro Dios, que es fiel a sus promesas. Respondamos fielmente a la vocación a la cual nos llama a cada uno de nosotros y recemos para que otros, particularmente nuestros jóvenes, hagan lo mismo.  Que todos en la Diócesis de Arlington se unan con todo el Cuerpo de Cristo en nuestra oración por un aumento de las vocaciones al Sacerdocio y a la Vida Consagrada.
