CRS / CCHD Program Office

The office assists Bishop Burbidge in supporting the work of Catholic Relief Services and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development within the Diocese of Arlington. It provides assistance and resources to the clergy, religious and laity of the Church of Arlington to join in promoting the dignity of the human person, building peace and justice, and helping those in poverty to achieve their full human potential as children of God.

Catholic Relief Services is the official international Catholic relief and development agency of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, carrying out their commitment to assist the poor and vulnerable around the world.

The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is the domestic anti-poverty program of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, working in the United States to carry out the mission of Jesus Christ"... to bring good news to the poor ... release to captives ... sight to the blind, and let the oppressed go free."(Luke 4:18).  CCHD helps people acquire the skills and resources to move out of poverty and live independently and with dignity.

It is not enough to offer someone a sandwich unless it is accompanied by the possibility of learning how to stand on one’s own two feet. Charity that leaves the poor person as he is, is not sufficient. True mercy, the mercy God gives to us and teaches us, demands justice, it demands that the poor find the way to be poor no longer.
