Manager, Development Support Services and Annual Fund

The Catholic Diocese of Arlington, Virginia seeks a fund-raising professional to execute and manage a comprehensive individual Annual Fund program while managing all functions related to all Development Program Services for Catholic Charities


The Office of Development assists parishes, schools and other entities within the Catholic Diocese of Arlington (CDA) with programs that encourage financial stewardship from parishioners to meet operational and capital needs. The Office also helps to design and implement a comprehensive diocesan development program that encourages financial giving by parishioners and others and that provides financial resources for parishes and schools and for the ministries, programs and services throughout the diocese including Catholic Charities of Arlington.

The Manager, Development Support Services and Annual Fund directs and manages the effective use of Catholic Charities’ constituency database (IMIS); oversees and implements business protocols and data management policies related to donor/prospect demographics and gift administration; executes and manages a comprehensive individual Annual Fund program which is primarily driven through direct mail appeals and acquisition mailings, and online and work-place contributions program; and supervises a full-time database entry/donor relations staff member.


As Manager of Development Support Services and supervisor of the Donor Relations Specialist, the manager employs best practices in the supporting areas of all CCDA gift processing, data management and donor relations as related to the full spectrum of donor and prospect management.

In support of other important revenue areas such as Major Giving, the CCDA Ball, Grants, misc. income, the manager is responsible for monitoring all fundraising and development revenue and preparing monthly progress reports in concert with CCDA financial department staff. The manager is responsible for communicating income progress in the context of CCDA Development Team staff meetings and printed reports.

Additional Database Management Support – Charities Volunteer DatabaseCCDA’s core of volunteers is a critical funding constituency. The manager also provides a pro-active customer support function to the Office of Volunteers especially as it relates to assisting in database management, conducting volunteer recognition activities and solicitation of funds.

The Development Services portion of the position accounts for 60% of the Manager’s staff time.


The remaining 40% of the work productivity for the Manager, Development Support Services and Annual Fund focuses on strengthening and advancing Charities’ Annual Fund program. With annual giving as the enabling component of successful major and gift planning programs, the manager is responsible for the management and growth of the institution’s portfolio of prospects and donors generated through direct mail (4 appeals and 4 newsletters), work-place giving, e-mail, phone/mail, program specific fundraising initiatives/drives, all focused on shaping a growth oriented plan for annual support.

The Manager works closely with the Director, Leadership Partnerships in crafting fundraising strategies and implementation for graduating lower level donors (below $5,000) to higher level major gift donors (above $5,000).

Additional Annual Fund Related Responsibilities:

Program Area Fundraising Support: The Manager provides a pro-active “customer support” function to Catholic Charities’ senior management and 13 program managers in assisting them in program-based fundraising and donor relations efforts and ensures these direct mail and other efforts are in alignment with CCDA ’s approved annual Development Plan.

Annual Fund Communications Related Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Director, Leadership Giving and Stewardship Programs, the Manager coordinates with Catholic Charities’ Communications Specialist the production of key institutional print collateral such as the Annual Report, Newsletters, stewardship communications and parish education materials about CCDA.
The manager provides planning and strategic direction for all of the areas noted above in the context of growing the Annual Fund program while supporting the greater development and strategic funding goals of Catholic Charities.

    While performing the duties of this job, required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weight of 10 – 50 pounds
    Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand, and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read
    Frequently required to sit, hear, talk and use repetitive motion of the hands/wrists
    Work performed in and out of the office setting
    Required to travel to parishes throughout the diocese
    Occasional evening and/or weekend work is required


Position Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5 to 8 years non-profit fundraising/development experience with emphasis in Annual Fund development via direct mail, web appeals, and forms of social media fundraising vehicles.
  • 5 to 8 years experience in managing constituency database, gift processing and donor relations functions.
  • Strong managerial, leadership and supervisory skills necessary.
  • Demonstrated analytical and fund raising skills with the ability to recognize opportunities, identify critical, high pay-off activities and prioritize them to attain goals.
  • Demonstrated organizational and communication skills as well as ability to work with and motivate other development professionals and volunteers. Excellent skill and understanding of computer and constituent software required.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment. Willingness and ability to travel in diocese and to work nights and weekends, as required.
  • Ability to work cooperatively to achieve common goals; support cooperation, collaboration and the sharing of information while providing the best quality product available and continuously upgrade standards to maintain quality, in all areas of responsibility.
  • Openness to new ideas and their implementation. Ability to react and adapt to changing situations appropriately.
  • Ability to listen carefully to and understand customers’ needs, both internally and externally, and proactively respond to those needs in a consistent and timely manner.
  • Must possess a strong personal commitment to the mission, goals, programs and services of the Catholic Church generally and of Catholic Charities specifically. Prefer a fully-initiated and practicing Catholic, able to participate in the full sacramental life of the Church.
  • Licenses/Certifications: Must maintain a current driver’s lice
