DESCRIPTION:This feast\, closely connected to the feast of Christmas and celebrated on the octave of Christmas\, is the most important and oldest of the major feasts of Mary. Mary’s Divine Maternity became a universal feast in 1931. Liturgical reform initiated by Vatican II placed it on January 1 in 1969. SUMMARY:Opening Mass for the Holy Year 2025
DESCRIPTION:Bishop Michael Burbidge will celebrate the Opening Mass for the Holy Year 2025 on Sunday\, January 5 at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of Saint Thomas More in Arlington\, VA. \nThe Mass celebrates the opening of the Holy Year 2025—the only official liturgy to open the Holy Year taking place within the diocese.  \nWhat else is notable about this Mass? You can expect unique opening rites: \n\n	(1) The “collectio” (gathering)\, with an introduction to the rite spoken by the Bishop\, an opening prayer\, proclamation of the Gospel\, and the reading of an excerpt from the Bull of Indiction.\n	(2) “The Pilgrimage” into the cathedral. Everyone who is present for the opening will walk in procession (as “Pilgrims of Hope”) with the bishop to the entrance of the cathedral.\n\n\n	This part is led by the Holy Year Cross\, used by the cathedral at the passion liturgy on Good Friday for many years and venerated by the faithful.\n	At the entrance\, the Bishop takes the Cross and holds it up for all to see as he says a special invocation – “Hail\, Cross of Christ\, our only hope.”\n	The Cross that is used will be displayed in the Cathedral throughout the entire Holy Year for the veneration of the faithful. As Pope Francis teaches\, “The content of the bread broken is the cross of Jesus\, his sacrifice of obedience out of love for the Father.”\n	The next part of the entrance is the Commemoration of Baptism\, which includes the blessing of water and the sprinkling rite. After the Bishop blesses the water\, he goes throughout the cathedral to sprinkle the people. DESCRIPTION:If you really feel that God may be calling you to life as a religious sister\, time spent at FIAT is an excellent way to “try it out” - you're living and praying and working and laughing with sisters as you serve alongside them at our discernment camp for high school girls.  \nThis is also an excellent opportunity to grow as a Catholic woman leader. \nYou will get to know the sisters as individuals\, hear how God revealed His plan to them\, and also hear about the prayer life and apostolic works of their orders.  You will also participate in the daily prayer of the camp: Mass\, Holy Hour\, Rosary\, and meditations and talks given by the sisters\, and serve as assistant group leaders for the 100 high school girls who come to grow in their own discernment.  \nThe camp is held at Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg\, MD and is always an amazing experience. Dates for 2025 are July 19-24. Applications are accepted January 1-31\, 2025; contact the Office of Vocations if you are interested.

DESCRIPTION:Theme: The Ignatian Spiritual Exercises \nWhen: Friday\, January 17\, 2025 - Monday\, January 20\, 2025 \nWhere: San Damiano Spiritual Life Center \nWho: All young adult women\, ages 19-35 \nLed by: The Crusaders of Mary \nCost: $345; includes meals and accommodation \nWe never want a young adult to miss a retreat or event for financial reasons so do ask if financial assistance is needed.  \nRegistration is now closed.  \nThe Spiritual Exercises are a profound experience of faith that leaves a mark on the person who goes through them doing them\, following the Ignatian method. They are the best means to begin a serious and effective true spiritual transformation.\nThere will be several meditations throughout the day\, daily Mass\, and other devotions. There will also be plenty of personal time for spiritual reading and journaling. During the retreat we will have the opportunity to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation.\nIn an atmosphere of deep and prayerful silence\, the soul is better prepared to discern the voice of the Lord and recognize the action of the Holy Spirit. The retreat begins at 8:00 p.m. on Friday and concludes at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. \nThe Crusaders of Mary is a Secular Institute of pontifical right founded by the Spanish Jesuit priest Venerable Tomás Morales Pérez S. J. A Secular Institute is a form of consecration to God in the Church by taking the vows of poverty\, chastity\, and obedience. The Crusaders of Mary\, as spouses of Christ\, live together as a family\, having everything in common and sharing a style of life and prayer. They don’t wear a habit and work in different career fields.\nConsecrated in the midst of the world and living the spirituality of contemplatives in action as imitation of Our Lady in the family of Nazareth\, they participate actively in the evangelization mission of the Church. Their spirituality is born from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius and the rich contemplative life that flows from the Carmelites. Their mission is oriented to evangelize secular realities such as education\, culture\, and work. DESCRIPTION:Topic: Hope in the Midst of Conflict: Christian Mission Work in Burma. \nTalk description: Christians have been disproportionately affected by the ongoing civil war in Burma. These groups face violence\, displacement\, and religious suppression as the military seeks to maintain control over diverse populations and extinguish opposition to its rule. This talk will focus on the impactful mission work of the Free Burma Rangers\, a courageous and dedicated team providing humanitarian aid and support in conflict zones across Burma. Thomas Sicree will share his experience of three months of volunteering with the Free Burma Rangers to bring freedom\, justice\, and peace to a war-torn land.  \nSpeaker bio: Thomas Sicree\, graduated from Saint Francis University in 2017 where he commissioned in the army. He served 7 years in the army as a field artillery officer\, leaving active duty in June of 2024. He volunteered with The Free Burma Rangers from October 2024 to January 2025. \n\n____________________________________________\nShenandoah Valley TOT is held on a third Tuesday every quarter. The January 21 event will be held at Honey and Hops Brew Works located at 212 E Main St. A\, Front Royal\, VA 22630.
