Message from Bishop Burbidge on the National Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

ARLINGTON, Va.  - The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of Arlington, released the following message today: 

From January 18-25, we will celebrate the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity by reflecting on the theme "Reconciliation: The Love of Christ Compels Us" (cf., 2 Cor. 5:14-20).  As this year marks the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, our focus on reconciliation is all the more needful.   

"We remember this anniversary," said Pope Francis recently, "with a renewed spirit and in the recognition that Christian unity is a priority, because we realize that much more unites us than separates us. The journey we have undertaken to attain that unity is itself a great gift that God gives us" (Apostolic Journey to Sweden, Oct. 31, 2016). 

If our hearts have grown cold or lukewarm to the call to Christian unity, may the words of our Lord and Savior ring anew in our ears: "That they may all be one: as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us" (Jn. 17:21).  May the love of Christ compel each of us to renew our active participation in this journey-this week and beyond.

Note:  Bishop Burbidge will participate in an annual prayer service for Christian unity at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 24, at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, 1500 N. Glebe Road, Arlington, together with the Rt. Rev. Edwin Gulick Jr., Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia; Rev. Richard Graham, Bishop of Metropolitan Washington for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America; and Rev. Tom Joyce of the Virginia Conference of United Methodist Church.  

Mensaje sobre la Semana Nacional de Oración por la Unidad de los Cristianos

Del 18 al 25 de enero, tendrá lugar la celebración anual de la Semana Nacional de Oración por la Unidad de los Cristianos con una reflexión sobre el tema "Reconciliación: El amor de Cristo nos obliga" (cf., 2 Cor. 5:14-20).  Puesto que en este año se conmemora el 500o aniversario de la Reforma, nuestro enfoque en la reconciliación es tanto más necesario.    

"Doy gracias a Dios por esta conmemoración conjunta", dijo el Papa Francisco recientemente, "que estamos viviendo con espíritu renovado y siendo conscientes que la unidad entre los cristianos es una prioridad, porque reconocemos que entre nosotros es mucho más lo que nos une que lo que nos separa. El camino emprendido para lograrla es ya un gran don que Dios nos regala" (Viaje apostólico a Suecia, 31 de octubre de 2016). 

Si nuestro corazón se muestra frío o tibio al llamamiento a la unidad de los cristianos, que las palabras de Nuestro Señor y Salvador resuenen de nuevo en nuestros oídos: "Que todos sean uno: como tú, Padre, en mí y yo en ti, que también ellos sean uno en nosotros" (Juan 17:21). Que el amor de Cristo obligue a cada uno de nosotros a renovar nuestra activa participación en este peregrinaje, esta semana y en los años venideros.  

Monseñor Burbidge participará en un oficio anual de oración por la unidad de los cristianos a las 7:30 p.m. el martes, 24 de enero, en la Iglesia Metodista Unida Mount Olivet, 1500 N. Glebe Road, Arlington, junto con Monseñor Edwin Gulick Jr., Obispo de la Diócesis Episcopal de Virginia; Monseñor Richard Graham, Obispo de la Iglesia Luterana Evangélica de los Estados Unidos en la zona metropolitana de Washington; y el Reverendo Señor Tom Joyce de la Conferencia de la Iglesia Metodista Unida de Virginia.
