Joe Flaherty

Pre-Theology II
Mount St. Mary's Seminary
St. Charles Borromeo Parish

What did you do prior to entering seminary?

I worked in a shipping warehouse in Chantilly. I also volunteered with the Legion of Mary at St. Anthony’s in Falls Church. I worked with Pro-life organizations like “40 Days for Life” and my parish’s Respect Life Committee; lately, I have focused on getting Latinos more involved in Pro-life activities. I served Daily Mass at St. Rita’s and I sang in the 6 PM Mass Choir at my parish St. Charles Borromeo.

What influenced your decision to apply for seminary entrance?

The exemplary lives of several Arlington priests who run themselves ragged to serve their communities while always looking to carve some time out for prayer.

Why do you want to be a priest?

I will have the ability to set people free through the Sacraments that Christ gave His Church.

What are your favorite pastimes?

Organizing and promoting events, studying history, singing and spending time in nature.

What is your favorite quote?

"Anything worth doing is worth doing badly." - G. K. Chesterton

Who is your favorite Saint and why?

St. Joseph. He is my namesake but also, he is a tremendous example of virtue and strength.

What advice would you give to a young man thinking about the seminary?

Your kind of not “allowed” to do this thing on your own so, do not try. If you have not spoken to another about your thoughts on becoming a priest, take a risk and tell someone you trust and then someone else you trust. Any vocation you have will not feel “real” to you until you vocalize it.
