The Diocese of Arlington will take part in its first “Week of Service,” from November 9-16. The week will culminate on the World Day of the Poor with a special Mass celebrated by Bishop Michael F. Burbidge at St. Philip Catholic Church in Falls Church.
All churches, schools, and ministries in the diocese have been invited to participate. The projects encompass various Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy, which are charitable actions that help neighbors in need. The week stems from the Diocesan Strategic Plan, specifically Initiative No. 7, which envisioned an annual diocesan service day to unify the faithful in service to others.
Some of the notable projects include:
- Dental clinic at Christ the Redeemer in Sterling
- Assembling backpacks for those who are transitioning from incarceration, at the Chancery, Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Annandale, and St Joseph Catholic Church in Alexandria
- Intergenerational activities with seniors at multiple locations
- Food, hygiene, and coat drives
- Respect Life drives collecting diapers, bottles, and other essentials for mothers in need
Projects will be done throughout all corners of the diocese, which includes 21 counties and seven cities. Collectively, there are more than 100 projects taking place.
“This is a special moment to call attention to how we are united in prayer and service with works of charity. We are serving our brothers and sisters most in need – the poor, the suffering, the sick, the inmate,” said Bishop Michael F. Burbidge.
