Today, the Catholic Diocese of Arlington announces the release of an enhanced homeschooling policy as a part of its commitment to supporting Catholic education in all its forms—through homeschooling families, diocesan high schools, parochial schools, and independent Catholic schools.
From its establishment, the Diocese has been committed to the success of homeschooling options and supports parents who homeschool. The diocese encourages the continued growth of homeschooling, for the good of parents and their children, the good of our diocese, and the good of our nation. Fathers and mothers who choose to homeschool provide a distinctive gift and witness to the Church, striving by God’s grace and in a special way to live as a domestic church and school of the virtues. Homeschooling is a profound example of the Church’s teaching that parents are the primary educators of their children, whatever mode of formal education may be chosen. (CCC 2221-2231)
As homeschooling has become increasingly prevalent, many Catholic homeschool groups have emerged and, in some cases, have requested permission from pastors to use parish facilities for educational or community activities. The Diocesan "Policy Regarding Homeschool Organizations and their Use of Parish Property" provides a framework for homeschool organizations to operate on parish property. The policy has been shared with pastors and will be shared with relevant homeschool groups.
The policy preserves the autonomy and self-governance of homeschool organizations while clarifying requirements regarding insurance, financial practices, and child protection to operate on parish property. The policy recognizes the difference between homeschool organizations operating on parish property and homeschooling families choosing to attend parish-sponsored ministries or events, the reception of Sacraments, or private prayer. The latter are considered integral to the spiritual growth of any family participating in parish life.
“As a priest and bishop, I have observed with great enthusiasm the growth of Catholic homeschooling across our country. It is my hope that every Catholic homeschooling family may continue to thrive in our diocese, and that an awareness of the benefits of homeschooling grows,” said Bishop Michael F. Burbidge. “Today’s policy is the fruit of deep and sustained consultation with pastors and parishes, Catholic homeschooling families, homeschool organizations, and other experts. Alongside diocesan high schools, parochial schools, and independent Catholic schools, Catholic homeschooling families and homeschool organizations play a vital role in the formation of young people for lives as faithful citizens. By God's grace, may all these essential educational options continue to grow for the good of all the faithful and for the good of our country.”
