ARLINGTON, VA—Tonight, the Alexandria City Council will vote on a “Resolution Declaring the City of Alexandria a Safe Haven for the LGBTQ+ Community.” This resolution would assert the authority of the City Manager to independently interpret the U.S. Constitution, direct city officials to use public funds to engage in future federal litigation, and encourage transgender surgical interventions, including for minors.
The Catholic Diocese of Arlington, in union with the universal Church, recognizes the sacred dignity, duties, and rights of every human being. We oppose privileging any class of person over others because we believe that all human persons are best protected when the law protects all equally. This principle is nobly articulated in the U.S. Constitution’s Equal Protection Clause. Equal Protection for all is bedrock for every federal law and is applicable in every state, city, and jurisdiction in our nation. Actions by local authorities which run contrary to Equal Protection, like those contemplated by the Alexandria City Council, aim not at justice for all, but only publicity for some. We urge all to oppose the City Council’s resolution, which runs contrary to our best principles, and will undermine the very protection under law being sought.
Alexandria residents may charitably express their views on the resolution by writing to the City Clerk, Gloria Sitton, or by calling City Hall prior to tonight's vote at (703) 746-4311.
