Bishop Burbidge's Statement for Observance of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
In just a few weeks, the Church throughout the world will celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom we in the United States especially honor as Patroness of our nation, on Monday December 9, 2024. This great feast day, as the prayers of the Mass for the Solemnity remind us, celebrates the singular privilege that our Blessed Mother was preserved from all stain of original sin so as to be “a worthy dwelling” for our Incarnate Lord.
The Solemnity this year falls on the Second Sunday of Advent which, liturgically, outranks the celebration of the Solemnity itself. It is for this reason and because of its importance in our lives as Catholics that the observance of the Solemnity is transferred to the next day, December 9.
When the transfer of certain Holy Days of Obligation occurs, the obligation for the faithful to attend Mass is usually dispensed. In the United States, however, the obligation of attending Mass on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception remained, even if the liturgical celebration took place on another day. The Dicastery for Legislative Texts of the Holy See has confirmed that attendance at Mass for the holy day is obligatory. For the faithful in the Diocese of Arlington, attending Mass for the Solemnity on December 9 still remains as such.
While the obligation to attend Mass varies from diocese to diocese, it is a beautiful time to celebrate and honor Mary as the patroness of our country as we seek her powerful intercession asking that her Son bless our nation and the world, especially at this time, with his peace. Those who are unable to participate at Mass because of health or hardship are dispensed by that very fact and are encouraged to join the universal Church in honoring Mary in some way during the day, for example through their personal prayer or acts of charity and piety.
It is my hope that all of us, priests and lay faithful, will see this celebration as a privilege and an opportunity to come together and fittingly honor the Blessed Virgin Mary. May our coming celebration of Advent and the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception confirm in our hearts the great love that God has for the world by sending his Only-Begotten Son, born of the Virgin, and of the tremendous motherly affection that Mary has for all of us, her children.
Observancia de la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Santísima Virgen María
Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo
Dentro de pocas semanas, la Iglesia en todo el mundo celebrará la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción de la Santísima Virgen María, a la que en Estados Unidos honramos especialmente como Patrona de nuestra nación, el lunes 9 de diciembre de 2024. Esta gran fiesta, como nos recuerdan las oraciones de la Misa de la Solemnidad, celebra el singular privilegio de que nuestra Santísima Madre fuera preservada de toda mancha de pecado original para ser «digna morada» de nuestro Señor Encarnado.
La Solemnidad cae este año en el segundo domingo de Adviento, que, litúrgicamente, precede a la celebración de la propia Solemnidad. Por este motivo y por su importancia en nuestras vidas como católicos, la celebración de la Solemnidad se traslada al día siguiente, el 9 de diciembre.
Cuando se produce el traslado de ciertos Días Santos de Precepto, se suele dispensar a los fieles de la obligación de asistir a misa. En Estados Unidos, sin embargo, se mantiene la obligación de asistir a misa en la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción, aunque la celebración litúrgica tenga lugar otro día. El Dicasterio para los Textos Legislativos de la Santa Sede ha confirmado la obligación de asistir a la Misa de este día sagrado. Para los fieles de la Diócesis de Arlington, la asistencia a Misa por la Solemnidad del 9 de diciembre sigue siendo tal.
Aunque la obligación de asistir a Misa varía de una diócesis a otra, es un hermoso momento para celebrar y honrar a María como patrona de nuestro país mientras buscamos su poderosa intercesión pidiendo que su Hijo bendiga a nuestra nación y al mundo, especialmente en este momento, con su paz. Aquellos que no puedan participar en la Misa por motivos de salud o dificultades están dispensados por ese mismo hecho y se les anima a unirse a la Iglesia universal para honrar a María de alguna manera durante el día, por ejemplo a través de su oración personal o de actos de caridad y piedad.
Espero que todos nosotros, sacerdotes y fieles laicos, veamos esta celebración como un privilegio y una oportunidad para reunirnos y honrar debidamente a la Santísima Virgen María. Que nuestra próxima celebración de Adviento y la Solemnidad de la Inmaculada Concepción confirmen en nuestros corazones el gran amor que Dios tiene por el mundo al enviar a su Hijo Unigénito, nacido de la Virgen, y del tremendo afecto maternal que María nos tiene a todos nosotros, sus hijos.
