We are called to journey to the Lord's mountain. It will be the highest of all the mountains. From there He will instruct us and from there He will send us out as His ambassadors.

Over the years, I have climbed countless mountains some of which are over 14,000 feet high. Every time, still, if I'm honest, when I first see the mountain that I am setting out to climb, my heart sinks a bit, I tense up, and I have this overwhelming feeling that “This is not possible. This is crazy. Humans are not meant to be up there…” Statements which have an element of truth to them. Then I realize, that this has been done before. Someone has already blazed the trail for me. All I have to do is start walking.

Then the climbing begins, the panting for air, the legs burning, the sweating, the self-questioning; “this is what you do for fun, are you having fun yet? Why do you want to get to the top anyway? What do you have to prove? You are not as strong or as experienced as these other climbers… you don't belong here…” 

There are some climbs that have a really long approach, where I see the summit from 50 miles away, but then as I start to climb, it is blocked by other hills or trees right in front of me. I can begin to wonder if I am on the right path.

There are some climbs where I begin at night in hopes of watching the sun rise from the top only to get lost in the dark. There are some climbs where I begin in the sunshine and blue skies but end up in the clouds with only a few feet of visibility. This is what climbing the Lord's mountain can be like. 

Sometimes we feel overwhelmed; but we would do well to remember we are not alone. The communion of saints have gone before us and have blazed a trail. We climb better when we climb in community with the Church in heaven and here below. We can stray from the path through the darkness of our sin or the bough of the world, but if we are constantly vigilant, we don't keep wandering off trail but stop, turn around, repent, and get back on the path. 

We must remember that it is hard for a reason. The pain, the effort, and the discomfort, are necessary. Before there was a Christmas morning, the Holy Family endured a long journey of uncertainty, danger, and exhaustion.

Ultimately, Advent is about deeply encountering God. The God who is beckoning us to the height of His holy mountain. 

We journey toward Him during Advent by also thinking back at His first coming as a Baby born of the Virgin Mary. Mary is a great travel companion for us for- especially as we recall that at the very first advent, she went in haste to the hill country to serve her cousin Elizabeth. 

May we commit not to climb the Lord's mountain alone, but to venture in haste with Mary.

This Advent, may we push past the pain, past the fear that we might not have what it takes or that we don't belong, may we push past all the lies that have prevented us from encountering God profoundly in the past. 

This Advent, may we commit, like Mary, not to be focused on ourselves and our personal climb, but rather to be attentive to those who are around us so we can all arrive at the summit together.

• In previous years, how serious have you been in entering into the season of Advent? How can this year be different?
• Recall a time where you felt fearful, alone, or overwhelmed. Invite the LORD into this experience and ask him to meet you there.
• Are there any doubts or anxieties stirring within your heart that are challenging your faith? Tell God what they are and present them at the foot of the Cross.
• Is there a particular saint that you can pray to this Advent?
• Consider a friend who helped you get back on the straight and narrow. What virtues of theirs inspired you to return to the LORD?
• Think of how much God desires to be with you this day. In what ways can you find rest in his love today?
• How can Mary be your travel companion this Advent? Devote yourself to a specific Marian devotion this season.
• When we consider the summit of heaven, who do you want to see there? Pray for your loved ones journeying here on earth with you.

Lean

Somos llamados a viajar a la montaña del Señor. Será la más alta de todas las montañas. Desde allá, Él nos dará instrucciones y nos enviará como sus embajadores.

Durante el transcurso de los años, he escalado innumerables montañas, algunas de las cuales tienen más de 4.000 metros de altura. A decir verdad, cada vez que veo por primera vez la montaña que me alisto a escalar, se me hunde un poco el corazón, me siento tenso y tengo esta abrumadora sensación de que “eso no es posible. Es una locura. El ser humano no se hizo para estar allá arriba”. Estas afirmaciones tienen un elemento de verdad. Luego me doy cuenta de que esto se ha hecho antes. Alguien ya me ha abierto el camino. Todo lo que tengo que hacer es empezar a caminar.

Luego comienzo a escalar, a jadear, a sentir que me queman las piernas, a sudar y a cuestionarme: “haces esto por entretenerte, pero ¿ya empezó la diversión? ¿Por qué quieres llegar a la cumbre? ¿Qué tienes que probar? Tú no eres tan fuerte ni tan experto como estos otros alpinistas, no perteneces a este lugar…”

En algunos casos, el camino que debo escalar es realmente un largo trayecto, desde donde veo la cumbre a 80 kilómetros de distancia, pero cuando comienzo a escalar, las colinas o los árboles que tengo enfrente me bloquean la vista. Comienzo a preguntarme si estoy en el camino correcto.

Unas veces comienzo a escalar por la noche con la esperanza de ver el sol naciente, pero acabo perdido en la oscuridad. Otras veces comienzo al amanecer con un cielo azul, pero termino con nubes y muy pocos metros de visibilidad. Algo así sucede al escalar la montaña del Señor.

A veces nos sentimos abrumados, pero nos convendría recordar que no estamos solos. La comunión de los santos nos ha precedido y ellos nos han abierto un camino. Escalamos mejor cuando lo hacemos en comunidad con la Iglesia en el Cielo y aquí en la Tierra. Es posible que nos desviemos del camino por las tinieblas de nuestro pecado o por el trayecto del mundo, pero si nos mantenemos siempre vigilantes, no seguimos desviándonos del camino, sino que nos detenemos, damos la vuelta, nos arrepentimos y volvemos al camino.

Debemos recordar que esto es difícil por una razón. El dolor, el esfuerzo y la incomodidad son necesarios. Antes de la mañana de la Navidad, la Sagrada Familia soportó un largo viaje de incertidumbre, peligro y agotamiento.

En definitiva, el Adviento se trata de un profundo encuentro con Dios. El Dios que nos llama a la altura de su montaña santa. Viajamos hacia Él durante el Adviento, pero también recordamos su primera venida como Niño nacido de la Virgen María. María es una excelente compañera de viaje para nosotros, especialmente al recordar que, en el primer Adviento, ella se apresuró a ir a un territorio montañoso a servirle a su prima Isabel.

Que nos comprometamos a no escalar solos la montaña del Señor, sino que nos apresuremos a hacerlo con María.

Que en este Adviento dejemos atrás el dolor, el miedo de carecer de lo que se necesita o de no pertenecer y todas las mentiras que nos han impedido nuestro encuentro profundo con Dios en el pasado. Que en este Adviento nos comprometamos, como María, no a concentrarnos en nosotros mismos ni en nuestra escalada personal, sino más bien a mantenernos atentos a quienes nos rodean para que todos podamos llegar juntos a la cumbre.

Reflexionen

• En años pasados, ¿qué tan firme ha sido su intención al entrar a la temporada de Adviento? ¿De qué forma puede ser diferente este año?
• Recuerden una época en que se sintieron atemorizados, solos o abrumados. Inviten al SEÑOR a esta experiencia y pídanle que los encuentre allá.
• ¿Tienen dudas o ansiedades que se agitan dentro de su corazón y son un desafío para su fe? Cuéntenselas a Dios y preséntenlas al pie de la Cruz.
• ¿Hay algún santo en particular al que pueden rezarle en este Adviento?
• Piensen en un amigo que les ayudó a volver al camino recto. ¿Qué virtudes de esa persona los inspiraron para volver al SEÑOR?
• Piensen en cuánto desea Dios estar con ustedes en este día. ¿De qué formas pueden descansar en el amor de Dios hoy?
• ¿Cómo puede María ser su compañera de viaje en este Adviento? Adquieran una devoción mariana en esta temporada.
• Al pensar en la cumbre del Cielo, ¿a quiénes desean ver allá? Recen por sus seres queridos que viajan con ustedes aquí en la Tierra.
