World Day of the Poor 2020

Stretch forth your hand to the poor

Pope Francis called on the Church throughout the world to observe a fourth World Day of the Poor on Sunday, November 15, 2020. This was an opportunity for Catholics to deepen their solidarity with the poor and to bring Christ's love to those suffering from material and spiritual poverty.

It is Pope Francis' wish that through this daylong observance, Catholics will grow in solidarity and friendship with the poor in their communities as they contribute to their aid through service, accompaniment, and other charitable means.

In his message from the first World Day of the Poor in 2017, Pope Francis calls the World Day of the Poor “a small answer” the Church gives to the poor “lest they think that their cry has gone unheard. It may well be like a drop of water in the desert of poverty, yet it can serve as a sign of sharing with those in need and enable them to sense the active presence of a brother or a sister. The poor do not need intermediaries, but the personal involvement of all those who hear their cry.”

The Diocese of Arlington is pleased to join the Holy Father in this effort and is sponsoring activities throughout the week to observe the World Day of the Poor.

Please take a moment to read the special message from our Bishop Michael Burbidge, as well as the Holy Father. Learn about the opportunities and resources available in our Diocese as we continue to celebrate the World Day of the Poor.
