St. Mary of Sorrows

Located near the City of Fairfax and George Mason University, St. Mary of Sorrows has both a historic church that has witnessed Virginia's history from the Civil War through modern times as well as beautiful, newly constructed church dedicated by Bishop Burbidge in 2020.

The title 'Saint Mary of Sorrows'

This church is named for the Seven Sorrows Mary experienced throughout her life, beginning with the prophecy of Simeon shortly after the birth of Jesus: “Behold, this child is destined for the fall and rise of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be contradicted (and you yourself a sword will pierce) so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.” As with the first sorrow, Mary's other sorrows regard her son: fleeing into Egypt to save the Christ Child's life; losing the child Jesus in the Temple for three days; meeting Christ on his way to Calvary; standing at the foot of the cross; watching Christ's body being taken down from the cross; and burying Christ's body.

Features

When you visit the beautiful new church, be sure to notice the Seven Sorrows depicted in stained glass above the altar, as well as a brick from the original 1860 church which rests on mortar alongside the new red bricks of the facade. The historic church, which is used to this day for small weddings, baptisms and other occasions, is a short drive away. Dedicated in 1860, it began as a single-room clapboard structure and has changed little in physical appearance over the years. While there, be sure to take note of the historic marker noting Clara Barton and founding of the Red Cross.

Santa María de los Dolores

La Parroquia de Santa María de los Dolores, localizada cerca de la Ciudad de Fairfax y la Universidad de George Mason, tiene una iglesia histórica, que ha presenciado la historia de Virginia desde la Guerra Civil hasta la época moderna, y una hermosa iglesia recién construida, que fue dedicada por Monseñor Burbidge en 2020.

El título 'Santa María de los Dolores'

Esta iglesia toma su nombre de los Siete Dolores sufridos por María durante su vida, que comenzaron con la profecía de Simeón poco después del nacimiento de Jesús: “Este niño está destinado para ser caída y resurgimiento de muchos en Israel; será signo de contradicción, para que sean descubiertos los pensamientos de muchos corazones. Y una espada traspasará tu alma". Como con el primer dolor, los otros dolores de María tienen que ver con Su Hijo: la huída a Egipto para salvar la vida del Niño Jesús; la desaparición del Niño Jesús en el Templo durante tres días; el encuentro con Cristo en la vía hacia el Calvario; su presencia a los pies de la Cruz; la vista del Cuerpo de Cristo al bajarlo de la Cruz; y el entierro del Cuerpo de Cristo.

Características

Al visitar esta nueva y hermosa iglesia, observe los siete dolores representados en los vitrales policromados sobre el altar y un ladrillo de la iglesia original construida en 1860, colocado en mortero a lo largo de los nuevos ladrillos rojos de la fachada. La iglesia histórica, que hasta hoy está abierta para ceremonias breves como matrimonios, bautismos y otras celebraciones, queda a poca distancia en auto. Fue dedicada en 1860, comenzó como una estructura de madera con tan solo un pequeño salón y ha cambiado poco de apariencia física con el transcurso de los años. Durante su visita, observe el marcador histórico con el nombre de Clara Barton y la fundación de la Cruz Roja.
