Mount St. Mary's Seminary, Propaedeutic Stage

St. John the Beloved Parish

What did you do prior to entering seminary?

I graduated from Villanova University this past May with a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science and geography.

What influenced your decision to apply for seminary entrance?

My relationships with priests influenced me because I learned a lot about what they do and who they are. I was also part of the Knights of Columbus at Villanova. Their mission to help young men stay faithful despite obstacles in our culture translates well into a priest's mission. But the tipping point to apply was when I first altar served during the Easter vigil this past April. Serving gave me a lot of peace which told me God really does want me to be a priest.

Why do you want to be a priest?

I want to be a priest because Jesus wants me to be a priest. If He never invited me to the priesthood, I wouldn't be here. My love for Christ led me to follow Him to this unique way of life. I want to share that love for God with others and show them the joy and fulfillment that comes from giving your whole heart to God.

What are your favorite pastimes?

I like to read spiritual books, particularly those on private revelations and mystical theology. I recently read much of The Life of Jesus Christ by Blessed Emmerich. I have made some YouTube video guides on mental prayer drawing much of the content from spiritual books.

What is your favorite quote?

One of my favorite quotes is "Compassion’s truest measure lies not in our service of those on the margins, but in our willingness to see ourselves in kinship with them. Soon we imagine with God this circle of compassion. Then we imagine no one standing outside of that circle, moving ourselves closer to the margins so that the margins themselves will be erased." — Gregory Boyle

Who is your favorite Saint and why?

I really liked St. Faustina even before reading her diary. Her portrait with the divine mercy image radiates love and peace and her diary illustrates how someone can go from living an ordinary Catholic life to union with Christ. My perception of God improved as a result, and I understood Him to not just be the most merciful, but truly being the king of mercy, mercy being His greatest attribute.

What advice would you give to a young man thinking about the seminary?

Vocational discernment relies on learning about the priesthood and trusting in God. So do your research. Have spiritual direction with your pastor or another priest, ask questions, go on a come and see trip, and most of all, contact the vocations director. Secondly, you need to trust God. At some point in your discernment, you will likely be praying for clarity, but you must not cling to it. Rather, pray that you may trust God is guiding you to your vocation.

Any other fun facts about yourself that people might find interesting?

I played alto saxophone throughout high school and college. I also went to the same college as Bishop Burbidge and Pope Leo!
