World Day of the Poor Events & Volunteer Opportunities

Pope Francis announced Sunday, November 19^th as World Day of the Poor. During the week leading up to World Day of the Poor, he invites us to create ‘moments of encounter’ with those we serve.

“It is my wish that, in the week preceding the World Day of the Poor… Christian communities will make every effort to create moments of encounter and friendship, solidarity and concrete assistance.” (World Day of the Poor Message, June 2017)

In response, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Arlington (CCDA) will be hosting volunteer days, presentations, and events the week of November 13^th through November 20^th, 2017 that invite the community to learn how CCDA is serving the poor.

St. Lucy Food Project Pantry Volunteer Opportunities

November 20 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. - Help weigh food donations received over the weekend, stock the shelves, pack food bags, wrap bread & veggies or make meal bags, breakfast kits, sandwich lunch bags for the evening meal, and care packages!

Naturalization Workshop Volunteer Opportunity

November 18 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Help eligible immigrants apply for their citizenship! This day-long workshop will walk applicants through the process of eligibility screening and filing out the application for citizenship.

When Prisoners Come Home

November 15 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. - Learn about the challenges facing those leaving jail and how your faith community can get involved with CCDA’s Welcome Home Re-Entry Program!

Free Budgeting and Money Management Workshop

November 14 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. - This free workshop is open to all who are interested in better managing their finances, regardless of religious affiliation including single parent families, couples, seniors on fixed incomes and young adults out in the workplace for the first time.

Build "Care Bags" for the Homeless in the Diocese

November 20 - 22

Help Catholic Charities bring hope to the homeless! Fill "care bags" with the items we have listed, then drop them off at one of the specified locations between Monday, November 20 and Wednesday, November 22 during regular office hours. "Care bags" will be distributed to the homeless in the Diocese via the new Catholic Charities Mobile Response Center Vehicle.
