Statement from Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge, Bishop of the Diocese of Arlington, Regarding the Visit of Salvadoran Bishops to the United States

I am pleased to welcome to the Catholic Diocese of Arlington my brother bishops from El Salvador: Cardinal Gregorio Rosa Chavez, Archbishop Jose L. Escobar Alas, Bishop Elías Bolaños, and Bishop William Iraheta. I am grateful for their continued devotion to Salvadoran Catholic immigrants and refugees living in the United States, for reaching out to lawmakers in the U.S. Congress, and for meeting with local Salvadoran families, many of which were driven from their homeland due to natural disasters and violence. These members of the lay faithful have made the Diocese of Arlington their home and have brought with them the Salvadoran culture, heritage and a rich faith, of which we have benefited greatly.

This opportunity is taken to express my gratitude to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops and its Office of Migration and Refugee Services for coordinating the bishops’ pastoral visit.

The presence of so many of the faithful from El Salvador among us—an estimated 125,000—provides a valued contribution to the Diocese of Arlington. The Salvadoran Catholic community eagerly participates in many diocesan celebrations, and they are a part of the culturally diverse Catholic communities that make up our diocesan Church. Like many other ethnicities, Salvadorans value and support the family unit, and create a warm and generous community, always ready to lend a helping hand as brothers and sisters in Christ. I am most appreciative of their many contributions and their witness of faith.

Me complace dar la bienvenida a la Diócesis Católica de Arlington a mis hermanos obispos de El Salvador: Cardenal Gregorio Rosa Chávez, al Arzobispo José Luis Escobar Alas, a los Obispos Elías Bolaños y William Iraheta.  Les agradezco por la consideración constante a los inmigrantes y a los refugiados católicos salvadoreños que viven en los Estados Unidos, por hablar con el Congreso de los Estados Unidos, y por reunirse con las familias salvadoreñas, muchas de las cuales fueron expulsadas de su patria debido a desastres naturales o violencia. Estos miembros de los fieles laicos han hecho la Diócesis de Arlington su hogar trayendo con ellos su cultura, y una gran fe, de los cuales nos hemos beneficiado en gran medida.

Quiero tomar esta oportunidad para expresar mi agradecimiento a la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos y su oficina de Migración y Refugiados por coordinar este viaje pastoral de los obispos.
