Bishop Michael F. Burbidge Statement for World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly in the United States

On Sunday, September 10, we celebrate the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly, the third observance since Pope Francis instituted this day to honor these treasured members of our human family.

This year's theme, “His mercy is from age to age,” (Luke 1:50) calls to mind Mary's visit to her older cousin Elizabeth. The Holy Father reminds us that the same Holy Spirit who was present at that encounter and inspired Mary's Magnificat “blesses and accompanies every fruitful encounter between different generations: between grandparents and grandchildren, between young and old.”

The senior members of our diocese have valuable experience, history and wisdom to share. They help us realize that we also have a part to play in the story of God's Church. Their abiding witness to Christ across many decades helps us understand our duty to persevere in faith and to complete our missions with grace and joy.

During his Mass celebrating grandparents and the elderly, Pope Francis reminded the faithful that the fruits of aging resemble the growth of a mustard seed, which starts out small but grows into a large tree, allowing others to take comfort in its shade. Likewise, with tender care, grandparents provide this same shade and stability for their own children and grandchildren.

“In this fruitful exchange,” Pope Francis said, “we can learn the beauty of life, build a fraternal society, and in the Church be enabled to encounter one another and dialogue between tradition and the newness of the Spirit.”

In this Marian year of preparation for the Golden Jubilee of the Diocese of Arlington, may Our Lady hold all our living and deceased grandparents and beloved elderly in her holy arms. And may Our Lord guide and bless all generations, as together we seek to build his kingdom on earth.

El domingo, 10 de septiembre, celebramos el Día Mundial de los Abuelos y las Personas Mayores, la tercera celebración desde que el Papa Francisco instituyó este día para honrar a estos preciados miembros de nuestra familia humana.

El tema de este año, “Su misericordia es de edad en edad” (Lucas 1:50) recuerda la visita de María a su prima mayor Isabel. El Santo Padre nos recuerda que el mismo Espíritu Santo que estuvo presente en aquel encuentro e inspiró el Magnificat de María “bendice y acompaña todo encuentro fructífero entre las diferentes generaciones: entre abuelos y nietos, entre jóvenes y mayores”.

Los miembros de mayores de nuestra diócesis tienen valiosa experiencia, historia y sabiduría para compartir. Nos ayudan a darnos cuenta de que nosotros también tenemos un papel que desempeñar en la historia de la Iglesia de Dios. Su testimonio permanente de Cristo a lo largo de muchas décadas nos ayuda a comprender nuestro deber de perseverar en la fe y completar nuestras misiones con gracia y alegría.

Durante su Misa en celebración de los abuelos y los ancianos, el Papa Francisco recordó a los fieles que los frutos del envejecimiento se asemejan al crecimiento de una semilla de mostaza, que comienza siendo pequeña pero crece hasta convertirse en un gran árbol, permitiendo que otros se consuelen a su sombra. Así mismo, con tierno cuidado, los abuelos brindan esa misma sombra y estabilidad a sus propios hijos y nietos.

“En este fructífero intercambio”, dijo el Papa Francisco, “podemos aprender la belleza de la vida, construir una sociedad fraterna, y en la Iglesia poder encontrarnos unos con otros y dialogar entre la tradición y la novedad del Espíritu”.

En este año mariano de preparación para el Jubileo de Oro de la Diócesis de Arlington, que Nuestra Señora tenga en sus santos brazos a todos nuestros abuelos vivos y fallecidos y a nuestros amados ancianos. Y que Nuestro Señor guíe y bendiga a todas las generaciones, mientras juntos buscamos construir su reino en la tierra.
