Pastoral Message on Poverty Awareness Month 2024

Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

Our nation observes Poverty Awareness Month in January, renewing focus on the desperate plight of those suffering without basic necessities and calling us to provide them our love and assistance.

Poverty is not always evident, especially in regions known for wealth and abundance. This is true in the Diocese of Arlington. While many of our neighbors have the resources to provide for their families, there is also hidden suffering which afflicts many who work hard but still fall short of what they need. As Catholics, we are called to bring this silent suffering to light and ease it when possible.

Whether we live in a community of privilege or poverty, we should never overlook those who need our help. It is our honor to serve them and uphold their value as human beings created in infinite love by God. As followers of Christ, the way we serve the poor and vulnerable reflects our commitment to the values of our faith and our respect for the dignity of all people.

I ask we all be united in prayer and act as instruments of God's tender compassion in service to the poor, this month and always.

Mensaje pastoral en el Mes de la Concientización sobre la Pobreza 2024

Hermanos y Hermanas en Cristo,

Nuestra nación celebra en enero el Mes de la Concientización sobre la Pobreza, renovando el enfoque en la situación desesperada de quienes sufren sin necesidades básicas y llamándonos a brindarles nuestro amor y asistencia.

La pobreza no siempre es evidente, especialmente en regiones conocidas por su riqueza y abundancia. Esto es cierto en la Diócesis de Arlington. Si bien muchos de nuestros vecinos tienen los recursos para mantener a sus familias, también existe un sufrimiento oculto que aflige a muchos que trabajan duro pero aún no alcanzan lo que necesitan. Como Católicos, estamos llamados a sacar a la luz este sufrimiento silencioso y aliviarlo cuando sea posible.

Ya sea que vivamos en una comunidad privilegiada o pobre, nunca debemos pasar por alto a quienes necesitan nuestra ayuda. Es un honor para nosotros servirles y defender su valor como seres humanos creados en amor infinito por Dios. Como seguidores de Cristo, la forma en que servimos a los pobres y vulnerables refleja nuestro compromiso con los valores de nuestra fe y nuestro respeto por la dignidad de todas las personas.

Pido que todos estemos unidos en oración y actuemos como instrumentos de la tierna compasión de Dios en el servicio a los pobres, este mes y siempre.
