Plenary indulgence opportunity for visitors of the Cathedral of Saint Thomas More

The Holy Father, Pope Francis, has granted the favor of a plenary indulgence on the occasion of our diocesan Golden Jubilee. The indulgence is granted to any member of the faithful who “visit the Cathedral Church of Saint Thomas More on pilgrimage and there devoutly attend the sacred Jubilee celebrations, or at least for a suitable period of time offer prayers to God for the fidelity of the United States of America to its Christian calling, for the obtaining of priestly and religious vocations and for the institution of the human family to be defended.” The individual is to conclude these prayers with the recitation of the Lord's Prayer, the Creed and prayers to the Blessed Virgin Mary. 

Individuals are also required to fulfill the usual conditions for an indulgence namely, the reception of Holy Communion, Sacramental Confession, and to offer prayers for the intentions of our Holy Father. The favor of the indulgence is in effect through the end of this calendar year. The full text of the decree can be found in the attached, provided in both English and in Spanish. 

Please note: The plenary indulgence is granted to individuals who visit Burke Hall on the lower level of the Cathedral as the renovations in the upper Church continue.

Oportunidad de Indulgencia Plenaria para los Visitantes de la Catedral de Santo Tomás Moro

El Santo Padre, el Papa Francisco, ha concedido el favor de una indulgencia plenaria con motivo de nuestro Jubileo de Oro diocesano. La indulgencia se concede a cualquier fiel que “visite en peregrinación la Iglesia Catedral de Santo Tomás Moro y asista allí devotamente a las sagradas celebraciones del Jubileo, o al menos durante un tiempo adecuado ofrezca oraciones a Dios por la fidelidad de los Estados Unidos de América a su vocación cristiana, por la obtención de vocaciones sacerdotales y religiosas y para que se defienda la institución de la familia humana”.  El individuo debe concluir estas oraciones con la recitación del Padre Nuestro, el Credo y oraciones a la Santísima Virgen María.

También se requiere que las personas cumplan con las condiciones habituales para obtener la indulgencia, es decir, la recepción de la Sagrada Comunión, la Confesión Sacramental y ofrecer oraciones por las intenciones de nuestro Santo Padre. Tenga en cuenta: La indulgencia plenaria se otorga a las personas que visitan el Salón Burke en el nivel inferior de la Catedral mientras continúan las renovaciones en la parte superior de la Iglesia.
