At the top of a mountain everything is clear.

The forest is behind you, the sky is above you, and the horizon stretches all before and about you. The twists and turns and sweat of the ascent are past and you can sit quietly lost in beauty.

A great height provides a magnificent perspective.  Distant are the cares and concerns of the world, and one can rest in silent communion with God.

During that first Advent Joseph encountered something overwhelming, entirely beyond his experience. His beloved, his betrothed, the Virgin Mary is with child. Tradition suggests that he did not doubt her goodness or her purity.

But he felt himself inadequate and unable to deal with a situation beyond any human experience... the deepest of Mysteries. So, he decided to stand down, to bow out to take the "safer" course and divorce Mary quietly. 

But God intervened. An angel appears in a dream. He tells Joseph not to be afraid to take Mary into his home. He explains to Joseph the Divine Origin of the child and makes it clear that Joseph is meant to be a part of this great event. He is to name her child Jesus "because he will save His people from their sins."

Joseph sees that he is a part of God's Plan, and like Mary, he says his "silent yes" to the Divine Design with Faith, Hope, and obedience, and the Holy Family becomes a Reality. 

Joseph's "summit moment" is shared with Mary and Jesus in a poor stable. Their long and arduous Advent journey, the search for a place for Mary to give birth, the frustration of being turned away again and again are past.

Joseph can rest with Mary and gaze with delight upon the Son of God and wonder: what will come next?

We know from the Gospels that the way ahead will not be easy for Joseph, or Mary, or for Jesus.

In this crucial moment, early in the Life of Christ, Joseph's quiet acceptance and humble obedience allowed Our Father's great plan to unfold.

As we descend the Lord's Mountain this Advent, we are tasked with taking everything God has revealed to us and bringing it to the world.

Just as the wise men did not go back the same way after they encountered the infant Jesus, we should also be noticeably different after this Advent journey.

There will be trials, but with the help of our Lady and St. Joseph, we can learn to listen in prayer, to trust--and to obey--so that we can play the role God has in mind for us in His Plan.

And perhaps, as a result of this journey, we will be strengthened to engage and be engaged by God while we pray in solitude: wandering alone, around and about, up the slopes of a mountain, to a summit not far from the sky. 

Reflection questions

• Consider the experience of St. Joseph at the greeting of the angel Gabriel. What emotions did he experience?
• Call to mind a trial in your own life. Ask St. Joseph for the courage to persevere.
• The Holy Family experienced rejection when looking for a place for Mary to give birth. Is there room in your heart to allow them to enter this Christmas?
• Spend time in Eucharistic Adoration simply to rest and gaze upon the Son of God. Entrust what's to come to him.
• God worked through the quiet obedience and humility of Mary and Joseph.  Are you willing to let him work through you?
• How can you better bring Christ into the world? In your home? your workplace?
• Reflect on the communion of engaging and be engaged by God. Encounter him now in the silence of your heart.
• Take a moment to appreciate this Advent journey with the Lord. Thank him for the many other companions who accompanied you along the way.

En la cumbre de la montaña todo se ve claro. El bosque está atrás, el firmamento está sobre su cabeza y el horizonte se extiende ante ustedes y a su alrededor. Los giros, las vueltas y el sudor del ascenso ya pasaron y ahora pueden sentarse tranquilos y perderse en la belleza. Una gran altura ofrece una magnífica perspectiva. Los cuidados y preocupaciones del mundo están distantes y es posible descansar en silenciosa comunicación con Dios.

Durante ese primer Adviento, José encontró algo abrumador, totalmente ajeno a su experiencia. Su amada, su prometida, la Virgen María esperaba un hijo. La tradición indica que él no dudó de su bondad ni se su pureza.

Pero se sintió inmerecedor e incapaz de enfrentar una situación que estaba más allá de cualquier experiencia humana... el más profundo de los Misterios. De modo que decidió alejarse para tomar la vía “más segura” y divorciarse de María en silencio. 

Pero Dios intervino. Un ángel se le apareció a José en un sueño. Le dijo que no tuviera miedo de recibir a María en su casa. Él le explicó a José el Origen Divino del niño y le aclaró que estaba previsto que José fuera parte de este gran acontecimiento. Dijo que Ella le daría al niño el nombre Jesús “porque Él salvaría a su pueblo de sus pecados”.  José entiende que él es parte del Plan de Dios y, al igual que María, le da su “silencioso sí” al Designio Divino con fe, esperanza y obediencia y, así, la Sagrada Familia se convierte en realidad. 

El “momento culminante” de José es compartido con María y Jesús en un pobre establo. Su largo y difícil viaje de Adviento, la búsqueda de un lugar para que María diera a luz y la frustración de ser rechazados una y otra vez ya pasaron.

José puede descansar con María, contemplar complacido al Hijo de Dios y preguntarse: ¿qué vendrá después?
Por los Evangelios sabemos que el camino por recorrer no será fácil para José, ni para María ni para Jesús.

En este momento decisivo, al comienzo de la Vida de Cristo, la silenciosa aceptación y la humilde obediencia de José permitieron que se realizara el gran plan de Nuestro Padre.
Al descender por la Montaña del Señor en este Adviento, tenemos el deber de tomar todo lo que Dios nos ha revelado y llevarlo al mundo.

Así como los Reyes Magos no regresaron por el mismo camino después de su encuentro con el Niño Jesús, también nosotros debemos ser sumamente distintos después de este peregrinaje de Adviento. Habrá dificultades, pero con la ayuda de Nuestra Señora y de San José, podremos aprender a escuchar en oración, a confiar y a obedecer para poder desempeñar el papel que Dios tiene previsto para nosotros en su Plan. Tal vez, como resultado de este viaje, nos fortaleceremos para hablar con Dios y ser llamados por Él mientras rezamos en soledad: caminando solos al subir por las faldas de una montaña hasta una cumbre que no queda lejos del firmamento.

Reflexionen

• Piensen en la experiencia de San José al oír el saludo del ángel Gabriel. ¿Qué emociones sintió?
• Recuerden una tribulación que hayan tenido en la vida. Pídanle a San José el valor de perseverar.
• La Sagrada Familia fue rechazada en la búsqueda de un lugar donde María pudiera dar a luz. ¿Hay cabida en su corazón para permitirle entrar en esta Navidad?
• Pasen tiempo en adoración de la Eucaristía sencillamente para descansar y contemplar al Hijo de Dios. Confíenle lo que está por venir.
• Dios trabajó por medio de la silenciosa obediencia y la humildad de María y José. ¿Están dispuestos a dejarlo trabajar por medio de ustedes?
• ¿Cómo pueden traer a Cristo al mundo de una manera mejor? ¿En su casa? ¿En su lugar de trabajo?
• Reflexionen sobre la comunión de hablar con Dios y ser llamados por Él. Búsquenlo ahora en el silencio de su corazón.
