Statement from Bishop Burbidge on the 60th World Day of Prayer for Vocations

Brothers and sisters in Christ, we have much to be grateful for as we celebrate the 60th World Day of Prayer for Vocations. On this day, we pray that Our Lord will continue to provide priests and consecrated religious to serve in our diocese. The Lord has truly answered our prayers, and we turn to him with grateful hearts. In just over a month, I will have the privilege of ordaining nine priests. This will bring the number of our diocesan priests newly ordained in the last four years to 31. We also rejoice in the fact that there are 53 men and women from our diocese currently in formation with religious orders and 46 seminarians preparing to be our future priests.  

During this second year of preparation for our diocesan Golden Jubilee, we turn to Mary, our mother and model of Christian life. We ask her to continue to bless and watch over those who have given their “fiat” ─ their “yes,” ─ by committing their lives to serving our Church. We ask her to accompany those who God may be calling today as they discern his will. 

Finally, we ask Mary to help each of us as we live out our particular vocations in the Church, strengthening us to respond to the invitation of Pope Francis: “Priests, consecrated men and women, lay faithful: Let us journey and work together in bearing witness to the truth that one great human family united in love is no utopian vision, but the very purpose for which God created us.” (Homily for World Day of Prayer for Vocations, May 8, 2022)

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we are called to greatness in our witness to the faith and commitment to God's call in our lives. May you live out that witness and embrace that call today, and always.

Declaración de Monseñor Burbidge con motivo de la 60^a Jornada Mundial de Oración por las Vocaciones

Hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

Tenemos mucho que agradecer al celebrar la 60^a Jornada Mundial de Oración por las Vocaciones. En este día, rezamos para que Nuestro Señor siga enviándonos sacerdotes y personas religiosas consagradas para servir en nuestra diócesis. En verdad, el Señor ha respondido a nuestras oraciones y recurrimos a Él con el corazón agradecido. Dentro de un mes, tendré el privilegio de ordenar a nueve sacerdotes. Con este acto aumentará a 31 el número de nuestros sacerdotes diocesanos ordenados en los últimos cuatro años.  También nos regocijamos por tener 53 hombres y mujeres de nuestra diócesis actualmente en formación con órdenes religiosas y 46 seminaristas en preparación como futuros sacerdotes en nuestro medio. 

Durante este segundo año de preparación para nuestro Jubileo de Oro diocesano, recurrimos a María, nuestra Madre y modelo de vida cristiana. Le rogamos que siga bendiciendo a quienes han pronunciado el fiat, han dicho que “sí”, al dedicar su vida al servicio de nuestra Iglesia, y que vele por ellos. Le pedimos que acompañe a quienes Dios puede llamar hoy mientras disciernen su Voluntad. 

Por último, le pedimos a María que nos ayude a cada uno de nosotros mientras vivimos nuestras vocaciones particulares en la Iglesia, fortaleciéndonos para responder a la invitación del Papa Francisco: “Sacerdotes, consagradas, consagrados y fieles laicos: caminamos y trabajamos juntos para testimoniar que una gran familia unida en el amor no es una utopía, sino el propósito para el que Dios nos ha creado” (Homilía de la Jornada Mundial de Oración por las Vocaciones, 8 de mayo de 2022).

Por el poder del Espíritu Santo, somos llamados a la grandeza al dar testimonio de la fe y al expresar nuestro compromiso con el llamado de Dios en nuestra vida.  Que ese testimonio se convierta en realidad y que acepten ese llamado hoy y siempre.
