Bishop Burbidge responds to Dignitas Infinita, a new declaration from Rome

On Monday, the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, the Vatican released Dignitas Infinita (Infinite Dignity), which I gratefully received. With compassion, pastoral care, and a deep understanding of movements in our world today, the declaration clearly reminds us of the inherent, God-given dignity of every human person and outlines challenges we must address to ensure that dignity is upheld.

Dignitas Infinita highlights numerous grave violations of human dignity facing society today, including abortion, euthanasia, surrogacy, gender ideology, mistreatment of people with disabilities, violence against women, sexual abuse, poverty, and human trafficking.

The declaration reminds all Catholics of the value and dignity of every human person, from the earliest stages through the final hours, “regardless of one's physical, psychological, social, or even moral deficiencies.” We must strive to be vigilant against the grave violations of human dignity aggressively being perpetuated in our world. As Catholics, we “cannot separate faith from the defense of human dignity, evangelization from the promotion of a dignified life, and spirituality from a commitment to the dignity of every human being,” the declaration states.

In our confused world, this document reaffirms an important aspect of the Church's teaching. It offers a clear, timely response to critical challenges facing men, women, and families today. Such difficulties reflect a profound lack of understanding about the truth of human dignity. In response, the declaration proposes the Church's beautiful, coherent, and consistent vision.

My brother priests and I will be studying the document and incorporating it into our preaching. I encourage all the faithful to accompany us in this pursuit. The declaration exhorts us to “work with all our might so that those who have done evil may repent and convert.” May the Holy Spirit grant us all zeal for souls! Please join me in praying that our Lord and his Blessed Mother will guide us as we bring this truth, clothed in the love of Christ, to our troubled times.

El lunes, en la Solemnidad de la Anunciación del Señor, el Vaticano publicó Dignitas Infinita (Dignidad Infinita), que recibí con gratitud. Con compasión, atención pastoral y una profunda comprensión de los movimientos de nuestro mundo actual, la declaración nos recuerda claramente la dignidad inherente, dada por Dios, a toda persona humana, y expone los retos que debemos afrontar para garantizar el mantenimiento de esa dignidad.

Dignitas Infinita pone de relieve numerosas violaciones graves de la dignidad humana a las que se enfrenta la sociedad actual, como el aborto, la eutanasia, la maternidad subrogada, la ideología de género, el maltrato a las personas con discapacidad, la violencia contra las mujeres, los abusos sexuales, la pobreza y la trata de seres humanos.

La declaración recuerda a todos los católicos el valor y la dignidad de toda persona humana, desde las primeras etapas hasta las últimas horas, "independientemente de sus deficiencias físicas, psicológicas, sociales o incluso morales". Debemos esforzarnos por permanecer vigilantes ante las graves violaciones de la dignidad humana que se perpetúan agresivamente en nuestro mundo. Como católicos, "no podemos separar la fe de la defensa de la dignidad humana, la evangelización de la promoción de una vida digna y la espiritualidad del compromiso con la dignidad de todo ser humano", afirma la declaración.

En nuestro confuso mundo, este documento reafirma un aspecto importante de la enseñanza de la Iglesia. Ofrece una respuesta clara y oportuna a las dificultades críticas a las que se enfrentan hoy los hombres, las mujeres y las familias. Tales dificultades reflejan una profunda falta de comprensión sobre la verdad de la dignidad humana. En respuesta, la declaración propone la visión hermosa, coherente y consecuente de la Iglesia.

Mis hermanos sacerdotes y yo estudiaremos el documento y lo incorporaremos a nuestra predicación. Animo a todos los fieles a que nos acompañen en este empeño. La declaración nos exhorta a "trabajar con todas nuestras fuerzas para que los que han hecho el mal se arrepientan y se conviertan". ¡Que el Espíritu Santo nos conceda a todos celo por las almas!
