May 21, 2019 - Archbishop Wilton D. Gregory installed as Archbishop of Washington

  • On May 21, 2019, Most Reverend Wilton D. Gregory was installed as Archbishop of Washington. Archbishop Gregory holds a doctorate in sacred liturgy from the Pontifical Liturgical Institute (Sant’ Anselmo) in Rome.


May 21, 2019 - Updates to Liturgy Workshops 2019

  • The Liturgy Workshops for Spring 2019 have concluded. Workshops were held at St Theresa (Ashburn) on 4/6, Queen of Apostles (Alexandria) on 4/27, St Elizabeth Ann Seton (Lake Ridge) on 5/11,  Sacred Heart of Jesus (Winchester) on 5/18, and Our Lady of Lourdes (Arlington) on 6/11-13.
  • Liturgy Workshops for Fall 2019 are being planned. At this time, a workshop is confirmed for St Mary of the Immaculate Conception (Fredericksburg) on 9/14, St John the Evangelist (Warrenton) on 9/21, and St James (Falls Church) on 10/5. Workshops will also be hosted in Deaneries VI  (date and location TBA).
  • Additional workshops in Summer 2019 may be held upon request and at the discretion of the Office of Divine Worship.


May 17, 2019 - FDLC concludes survey of diocesan liturgy offices

  • On May 17, 2019, the FDLC concluded its survey of diocesan offices of worship within the US. The survey addressed such topics as the structure of the offices, the structure of diocesan liturgical commissions, RCIA and sacraments of initiation, celebrations in the extraordinary form, formation in liturgical design, and the organization’s national meeting.


May 7, 2019 - Pope Francis promulgates "Vos estis lux mundi"

  • On May 7, 2019, Pope Francis, in the apostolic letter issued motu proprio “Vos estis lux mundi”, decreed provisions concerning crimes of sexual abuse. In the letter, the Holy Father emphasizes, "...personal sanctity and moral commitment can contribute to promoting the full credibility of the Gospel message and the effectiveness of the Church’s mission. This becomes possible only with the grace of the Holy Spirit poured into our hearts, as we must always keep in mind the words of Jesus: ‘Apart from me you can do nothing’ [Jn 15:5]" (Pope Francis, “Vos estis lux mundi”).


March 25, 2019 - Pope Francis promulgates Christus Vivit!

  • On the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord (March 25, 2019), Pope Francis promulgated the Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation Christus Vivit!, addressed to and for young people. In the exhortation, the Holy Father observes, "When it comes to worship and prayer, ‘in many settings, young Catholics are asking for prayer opportunities and sacramental celebrations capable of speaking to their daily lives through a fresh, authentic and joyful liturgy’ [Synod Final Document, no. 51]. It is important to make the most of the great moments of the liturgical year, particularly Holy Week, Pentecost and Christmas. But other festive occasions can provide a welcome break in their routine and help them experience the joy of faith" (Pope Francis, Christus Vivit!, no. 224).


March 6, 2019 - Date of Confirmation for Adults 2019

  • On Wednesday, March 6th the Office of the Bishop announced the following details for the annual diocesan celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation for adults: Sunday, June 9, 2019 (Pentecost) - 2:30pm - Cathedral of Saint Thomas More. March 6, 2019 - Order of Blessing the Oil of Catechumens and of the Sick and of Consecrating the Chrism

  • On Ash Wednesday (March 6, 2019), the newly translated Order of Blessing the Oil of Catechumens and of the Sick and of Consecrating the Chrism became the required ritual for use in the United States. Copies can be purchased from the USCCB's online store. This rite was used at the Chrism Mass (April 18, 2019).


February 12-15, 2019 - CDWDS Plenary Session "The Liturgical Formation of the People of God"

  • On February 12-15, 2019, the plenary session of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments addressed the topic "The Liturgical Formation of the People of God." Though speaking to the participants in the general assembly, Pope Francis' reminder to the assembly is relevant for all who engage in liturgical formation: "Dear brothers and sisters, we are all called to deepen and revive our liturgical formation. The liturgy is in fact the main road through which Christian life passes through every phase of its growth. You therefore have before you a great and beautiful task: to work so that the People of God may rediscover the beauty of meeting the Lord in the celebration of His mysteries and, by meeting Him, have life in His name" (Pope Francis, Address to Plenary Assembly of CDWDS, 14 Feb 2019).

    January 25, 2019 - Optional Memorial of Pope Saint Paul VI, May 29

    • The Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments published a Decree on the Inscription of the Celebration of Saint Paul VI, Pope, in the General Roman Calendar (Prot. N. 29/19). The memorial is observed on May 29. The Decree was accompanied by a commentary by Prefect Robert Cardinal Sarah.
    • As of February 8, 2019, there are no approved English or Spanish translations of the texts for the celebration. Appropriate texts from the Common of Pastors: For a Pope may be used at Mass and in the Liturgy of the Hours. More information will be provided shortly on the USCCB website: http://www.usccb.org/paulvi.


    January 17, 2019 - Suppression of Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei

    • On January 17, 2019, Pope Francis suppressed the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei by an apostolic letter issued motu proprio. The tasks of the former commission are now treated by a special section of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith.
