Girl Scouts Help Animals at Local Shelter

ARLINGTON, Va. – On December 2 at the Prince William County Animal Shelter Girl Scout Cadettes (6^th-8^th grade) from St. Francis of Assisi School in Triangle will volunteer at the Shelter’s holiday open house. The Cadettes will provide tours of the Shelter to visiting families and will run two craft booths to raise money.

Where:         Prince William County Animal Shelter, 14807 Bristow Road, Manassas

This is the second time the St. Francis of Assisi Girl Scouts will work with the Prince William County Animal Shelter. Last month, parishioners at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church gave pet food and supplies to the Girl Scouts drive for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). As a result, the St. Francis Girl Scouts donated more than 200 lbs. of pet food to the Prince William County Animal Shelter.

According to its website, the Prince William County Animal Shelter works hard to find homes for the animals. Animals are brought into the shelter at an alarming rate, and a sudden influx of animals may fill the shelter beyond capacity. All stray animals taken into the Prince William County Animal Shelter have a minimum 5-day grace period, after which Virginia State law dictates the animal may be euthanized as a means of disposition (those with collars or some sort of identification receive a 10-day grace period). The shelter encourages the public to adopt from the shelter because it saves lives. One such success story is about Snow Bear, a Great Pyrenees that entered the shelter when he was two years old after his owner was evicted. Since then, Snow Bear has found a new home.
