Statement from Bishop Burbidge
on Martin Luther King Jr. Day

January 15 offers the opportunity to celebrate Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s birthday, whose life devoted to ending prejudice and racism is an inspiration for all people, regardless of their faith tradition or ethnicity.

Events such as those in Charlottesville remind us that racism is an evil that still plagues our country, resulting in anger, violence and discord. Those who hold to corrupt and disjointed views need God’s grace and our unfailing and untiring witness rooted in the dignity of each and every person.

Dr. King reminds us that “Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that.” Jesus is the true Light that drives out darkness and His Love overcomes all hatred. On this observance of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., may we entrust our hearts and the hearts hardened by hatred and prejudice to Our Lord Jesus, in whom we place our prayers, our hope and our dreams.

In my first year as the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Arlington, I have been blessed to witness the strength and faith of our culturally diverse communities, including our vibrant and devout Black Catholic community. I take this opportunity to thank them for their faithful and steadfast witness to Christ’s Church and to our communities.

El 15 de enero nos ofrece la oportunidad de celebrar el natalicio del Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., quien dedicó su vida a acabar con el prejuicio y el racismo—una inspiración para todas las personas, independientemente de su tradición religiosa o de su origen étnico.

Algunos acontecimientos recientes, como los ocurridos en Charlottesville, nos recuerdan que el racismo es un mal que todavía azota a nuestro país y que trae como consecuencia la ira, la violencia y la discordia. Quienes tienen puntos de vista corruptos e incoherentes necesitan la gracia de Dios y nuestro firme e imperturbable testimonio arraigado en la dignidad de cada persona.  

El Dr. King nos recuerda que “La oscuridad no puede expulsar a la oscuridad: solo la luz puede hacer eso. El odio no puede expulsar al odio: solo el amor puede hacer eso”. Jesús es la Luz verdadera que expulsa a la oscuridad y su Amor supera todo odio. En este día de observancia de la vida del Dr. King, encomendemos nuestros corazones y los corazones endurecidos por el odio y el prejuicio a Nuestro Señor Jesucristo, a quien elevamos nuestras plegarias y esperanzas, junto con nuestros sueños.

En mi primer aniversario como Obispo de la Diócesis de Arlington, he tenido la bendición de presenciar la fortaleza y la fe de nuestras comunidades culturalmente diversas, incluso de nuestra vibrante y devota comunidad católica afroestadounidense. Aprovecho esta oportunidad para agradecerles su fiel e inquebrantable testimonio de Cristo ante la Iglesia y ante nuestras comunidades.
